| Earlier this year (in announcement by Imyreld dated 1st March 2021) it was noted that not dating anime could lead to being called to Invalids. Due to an increase in such posts rather than a fall, at least personally (though this has been discussed with all inspectors and we're trying to be consistent on this) I'll be instantly invalidating posts that require Start or End dates, not just asking for future changes. Dates matter because it can cause issues with a majority of challenges, and leads to being asked for a lot of watch history. It's frustrating to check since regular methods don't work (namely, the HoF or date searches on lists) and requires a lot more work than the average post to check. This may a bit vague, so below is how I generally check anime lists and HoF checklists, and why not dating anime is an issue. The yellow box shows the url for my list. order=2 means it's ordered by End Date. =3 would be Start Date. In light blue is the date column, and in red is the list number column. Both of these are important because then I just have to find the start/end date and then just remember the list number - anything before that number should be invalid. If the blue box is missing I have to use the dropdown, whilst if the red box is missing I have to keep looking at the dates individually. This is especially a pain because people use different date formats. This image shows a list of a person who does not add dates. This list also has a script used that removes formatting so that it loads faster. In the blue box is the missing dates and the last updated date. Last updated is impacted by any edits made to that anime, which can cause issues, especially for per-Days! You can also see the person is missing the column numbering (if anyone can recognise where the font is from I'll be surprised!) You can also see in the url bar that the order=5 in order to list it by last updated. This image shows a HoF checklist! In the yellow box you can see the url bar - the challenge is romance and I'm the user. By editing the url it's easy to move challenges, user or both quickly! In the light blue box is the start date of a hypothetical challenge, I've seen 28 romance anime this year as seen in the white box. The light green shows the script I use to alphabetise the HoF to make finding anime faster. This image is still my list but with undated anime readded. It shows that I've seen 60 anime, but most of these are from before I joined MAL. For users who only use last updated, it's impossible to check if the anime is valid using the HoF, only if it has the tag required for the challenge (in this case, Romance). This is also part of why we say export from the HoF for challenges that don't have requirements, only needing a list. Since the anime are in the same order as the HoF, it only takes a quick look to know that the challenge is correct! So, I hope you found this insight into the daily life of an inspector interesting, and why dates are important!
