Synopsis

In the ancient kingdom of Yamato, between the eras of gods and men, there was a time when the two coexisted. Miyo is chosen to serve as a human sacrifice to her village's god, Kippuuson-no-Mikoto, but she's not ready to die! Can Ozuno, a monk with the ability to speak one-on-one with the gods, save her life?

This manga is a hidden gem.

The characters are good and varied, from a young girl that is to be sacrificed to a native japanese god, to a young "oni" that was once human yet became a monster, to their monk master that guides them as he makes his way towards one of the most powerful gods, whom he cherishes a lot and has become a monster. The story is episodic yet well written, with the overarching plot points being compelling enough to explain the actions of our characters. Touge Oni is really an excellent manga. It is, at this point, a bit episodic: the protagonists visit a sequence of gods (kami) on various missions. However, a larger, very clever plot involving time travel is beginning to coalesce.

I particularly liked chapters 3.5 and 6.5, which step back from the story to focus on the story's first villain. The author deftly humanizes a character who seems in the first chapter to be unambiguously cruel and monstrous. I expect to see more of this subtle characterization as the story progresses.

Saw this on read a manga 2025 stacks,thought the artstyle is cool and clean and thought i will give it a try.
The story is convoluted and so cluttered it feels like i am hopping between peoples fever dreams,i think they overcomplicated it with too much stuff they want to add in that the main story of the manga gets lost in the sauce.

The artstyle is clean,they made the kami designs look very humongous they feel daunting and suffocating which i liked,really reminds me of Higanjima or something like Freak Island,they are very far apart though just a slight season of that feeling.
