If you're looking for a lighthearted rofan to pass the time with, this definitely isn't the right thing for you. I think calling this the very flawed love story of two very flawed people in a very flawed society is probably the best way to describe it.
Their relationship starts out extremely toxic and if it were real, I would be begging for them to separate. But since it's fiction, if you have the patience and willingness to engage with this story, you will get to experience a very real and touching relationship development.
However, this story deals with very
...
serious issues, a lot of which may not be resolved in ways that feel satisfying. If most rofans are heavy on the fantasy part of historic fantasy, this story is very heavy on the "historic".
The female lead has a family that, while they do care for her, are still quite abusive. The story starts and ends with her standing up to them for what she wants, but there is never any huge revenge plot, or them really changing their ways. I think the first chapter really encapsulates it quite well.
The male lead is a womanizing drug and alcohol addict and his environment is full of similar people, that end up more or less happy. His addiction is NOT AT ALL romanticized in this story, for good and for bad. It's a really realistic portrayal and I quite liked it, but if you don't feel able to deal with that entails, including withdrawal symptoms, and him trying and failing to become sober for several times before eventually succeeding, then it's probably for the better to skip this one.
Also there's a miscarriage, and the female lead self harms in the first episode, but that should about cover all warnings I can think of.
All in all, it sometimes felt like quite a frustrating read and I started out really disliking most characters, but by the end came to care for most of them in one way or another. I love my escape fantasies, but this was a great palate cleanser and ended up really touching me emotionally. I've rarely been this happy for two leads to have a happy ending and it felt well and truly deserved.
