I went into this side story with great expectations. Having never played the game (Danmachi Memoria Freese, a now out of service gacha) it originated from, I've only heard positive reviews from players and fans. I was especially intrigued by the fact that it apparently focuses on the Astrea Familia, so after the events of season 4 of the anime and Vol. 18 of the light novel, I dove in headfirst with gusto.
The first volume was slightly disappointing; I was expecting something much more impactful but to me (at the time, at least) it all felt very laid back and dull. However, it was still
...
in the build-up stage, so I pushed on.
Volume 2 was more action packed and in line with what I'd imagined, and I began to enjoy the story much more. Though some moments still can be perceived as cliche, they didn't feel redundant or stupid, and knowing that the story focuses on undeveloped characters made me appreciate it more.
And then, there's the final volume. The very definition of a "final battle," and the culmination of the past two volumes of buildup. It was glorious, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Omori always has a way with his words, portraying simple scenarios using poignant phrases, and this book is the very definition of that. None of the plot points are exceptionally novel or mindblowing, but using common tropes the author masterfully weaves it into a tale to remember with colorful prose.
As a Danmachi fan, this read was delightful and certainly amazing.
