I agree with what you said about Tenma, people who would rather Tenma have shot Johan didn't appreciate the depth of the characters the anime is attempting to portray. Then again I am hardly surprised since MALs demographic seems to be majority teenagers/young adults that I wouldn't expect to understand these nuances in the first place in favoring of just watching brainless action/drama and calling everything 'great'. I generally stay away from the forums because I've seen enough to know that the populist opinion =/= good opinion. And this was also from personal experience of getting baited by MAL rankings into watching Anohana, SAO, and Angel Beats, all of which the community raves about but I found to be some of the most uninspirational garbage I've ever seen.

Alas I digress. Glad to know you also appreciated Tenma struggling to balance his duty as a doctor with his (im)moral responsibility to end Johan. Cheers mate!

LOL lizardman, I got a good laugh out of that one. I think part of the ingenuity in Monster lies in its characters staying in their tropes and how these tropes interact with each other. I actually really enjoyed watching Lunge's stubbornness because it makes me curious at what point does the evidence for Tenma's innocence become convincing enough for him to finally re-evaluate.

Also if I recall correctly Gillen was psychiatrist character and Tenma's classmate in med school right? If so, I loved his backstory.

Indeed, monster invests a lot of time into its side characters! Everyone becomes relevant too, so it's not like anyone is just there as a filler character. My favorite side character was Wolfgang Grimmer - I don't think you've met him yet, he should come later... after the Schuwald arc if I recall correctly. Also how has Lunge be doing? Is he still relentlessly pursuing Tenma as a criminal or is he showing signs of wavering? Lunge was my second favorite side character for reasons you'll see later.

Yeah Johan pops in and out sporadically in the beginning, but you see him a lot in the later/last arc(s). I think I mentioned this earlier, but Monster does an impressive job of painting Johan to be a haunting mastermind despite giving him proportionally miniscule screentime.

I'll bookmark that, and maybe take a look at the manga again. But let me know if you find an answer to why Roberto would want kill Nina later in the anime - I'm curious to remember as well! c:
And look at you, already more than 1/4 the way through! Hehe

I didn't find Dieter to be that annoying either. I actually quite liked him.

Oof, sorry I don't remember these interactions very well so I can't say much about them. Roberto was one of those next-in-line antagonists after Johan that also made it really far into the anime. Who did he order to shoot Nina? I also find that strange....
I recall him being an interesting character because he idolizes Johan to the point of almost being delusional but that's about all I can remember... sorry

Ahhh yes. The gun and how Tenma decides to use it, as you'll later find out, paints an interesting dichotomy between Tenma's conflicting morals as a doctor (a profession in which we swore an oath to 'do no harm') against his humanistic instincts to eliminate Johan. To a broader extent it presents an interesting rhetorical question. If you are a surgeon (i.e. in Tenma's shoes) and your patient is a dying serial killer - do you choose to save him and have him judged before the court, even if it means he might suffer a lighter sentence than death, or do you let him die and have your reputation as a lifesaver ruined to that of a murderer? Truly intriguing.

Is the kid Dieter? He becomes quite interesting later too c:

Haha I doubt any video stores are left, but that's interesting I never thought B&N might have them. I actually visit B&N quite frequently because I'm an avid reader myself, so the next time I go, I'll make an effort to check if they have copies of The Wire on sale.

Looks like you're making good progress on Monster (ep 10 already!), hope the show is still living up to your expectations ^^
Precedex Sep 5, 2018 2:18 PM
Man... now you're making me want to watch The Wire if you describe it that way LOL! Do they just sell them at your local malls or something? I'm not very big on TV shows so I didn't even bother with any of the cable options at home because apparently subscriptions to HBO/etc. are super expensive :/
Too bad it never went on Netflix </3

Monster is definitely a 'slow burn' if anything, I'm sure you'll enjoy watching everything unfold. I might not remember the specifics of what happened, but yes, definitely let me know of your thoughts! c:

I don't remember exactly how the first season ended but I agree with you that it was a bittersweet ending and offered satisfactory closure to the series. I was curious about what happens in the second season so I watched the first episode but dropped it as soon as I realized it featured a completely different cast haha.

Glad you're enjoying Monster so far! And I have to agree with you: everything about the show, in my opinion, can be described as 'haunting.' There aren't any plot gimmicks, magical elements, etc., everything - Tenma's injustice, internal politics, and later Johan behavior - could have just as easily been realistic accounts of events transpired in real life. All the characters also stay consistent with their tropes that complements each other as the show progresses.

I've always wanted to watch The Wire but I haven't found a place to watch it. Too bad it's not on netflix :(
My friend showed me the 'fuck fuck fuck' crime scene reaction and I instantly got interested in the show haha!
Hopefully I'll find somewhere to download and watch it in the future. c':

Glad you enjoyed Psycho Pass! Don't bother with the second season though, that was garbage.

And yes I'm so excited you're watching Monster! The beginning is great is mostly just building up its characters. Once you get to episode ~20 that's when things really start rolling pretty quickly. Definitely let me know what you think!
I remembered binging through all 72 episodes in 3-4 days myself haha.

damnn. honestly i survived too. i was one of the "cool kids" who got their phone in middle school so i felt pretty proud about that. i didn't use it too much because back then, no one really had phones. like it was more of ds's and mp3 players. i still remember when nintendo ds's were the hugest thing. i still have mine haha, even though like all the buttons are broken xd. i also remember when kids would collect pokemon cards and trade them during break times. nowadays, it's all just texting and apps. kinda annoying to see everyone using their phone 24/7. and omg, my 3 year old cousin already memorized my aunt's passcode on her phone.. he can't eat without watching youtube videos ;/

aww that's such a sweet little life goal haha. and same here. even though i'm already a college student, i still act like i'm a kid LOL. i don't wanna be those boring adults who just clickity clack away on their keyboards with their eyes glued to the screen. that's just gonna get hella boring and depressing. i just wanna live out my life to the fullest y'know? omg honestly, the future generations are getting trashier and trashier lol. literally every little 7 year old already have their own smart phones, like i didn't even get my own flip phone until i was in 7th grade lmaoo. technology isn't so great sometimes ;/
It’s time to ditch the text file.
