Review: Call of the Night Season 2 (much better than one frame man literal trash but still disappointing)
Having adored Call of the Night’s first season, I walked into Season 2 with high hopes—perhaps too high. What made the original so special was its effortless charm: a fresh atmosphere, gorgeous neon-soaked art, and a laid-back, almost dreamy vibe that filled every episode with warmth. Unfortunately, Season 2 abandons much of that identity. It tries to reinvent itself into something darker, more serious, and “profound,” but the shift feels forced rather than natural.
One of the biggest disappointments is the romance. Season 1 hinted at a slow, intriguing
...
progression that had real potential to blossom. Instead, Season 2 delivers almost nothing. Whenever it does attempt romantic development, it feels half-hearted and, frankly, dull.
Characters who once felt lively and full of promise also suffer. Many of them lose the spark that made them interesting, becoming more like shadows of their Season 1 selves. The detective character, who initially seemed compelling, becomes the season’s biggest misfire. The writing around her feels like an unnecessary attempt at being “deep” or Shakespearean, but instead it comes across as pretentious and poorly executed.
Despite these frustrations—especially the disaster that was Episode 10—I still give Season 2 a 3/10. The first few episodes were genuinely strong, and the art and animation remain stunning throughout, especially the color work reminiscent of Episode 1. But overall, this was a disappointing follow-up to a brilliant first season.

I’ll be honest—I was pretty hesitant before starting To Be Hero X. Chinese anime (donghua) never really appealed to me much, and I wasn’t expecting anything great. But wow… this turned out to be one of the biggest surprises of the year. Honestly, I don’t know why more people aren’t talking about it. People are sleeping on this gem, and for me, it’s easily anime of the year.
The story blends absurd humor, emotional drama, and stylish action in such a unique way that it constantly keeps you guessing. One moment you’re laughing at the ridiculous comedy, the next you’re pulled into a surprisingly deep and
...
heartfelt storyline. Unlike a lot of anime that stick to one tone, To Be Hero X manages to balance everything—humor, tragedy, and hype—without losing its identity.
The characters are another major strength. The main cast isn’t just quirky for the sake of comedy; they’re actually layered, with motivations that become more and more engaging as the show progresses. X himself is such an unpredictable but compelling protagonist, and the supporting characters give the series a lot of heart. You’ll end up caring about them far more than you expect.
On top of that, the animation style is bold and different, yet it works perfectly with the tone of the story. Every fight is visually memorable, and even the quieter moments are full of style.
Overall, To Be Hero X is an incredible ride—funny, emotional, and powerful. Don’t let the “Chinese anime” label stop you. Give it a shot, because this one is special.
Score: 10/10 (Anime of the Year for me)
