Hey Thhorde if you want a good eroge thats english translated, i suggest The Sagara Family, Monmusu Quest, Discipline, and Sengoku Rance.

Yo. Just stumbled across your profile and figured I'd recommend a few things based on your current favourites, since you're new to anime and all.

True Tears (School Romance, excellent art/music)
Hanasaku Iroha (Slice of Life, excellent art, actual plot, far superior to K-ON! imo)
Tsuritama (Slice of Life/Adventure, excellent art, tale of friendship so to speak)

I'm sure everyone will tell you to watch Clannad and Haruhi, which you should, but those are my personal recs, haha.

Umm, my only explanation would be that otonashi was a vegetable or something, and other technicalities. That's probably the reason people hate on it lol. I didn't even notice that :P

It was great!!! (⌒▽⌒) It is definitely NOT overrated!! I wish they made a prequel or something, cuz kanade is not explained enuf :P
