I really want to like this anime. LIKE I REALLY WANT TO LIKE THIS ANIME, but I can't lie to myself.
I think Sawako is a lovely main character, and all the characters have their own charm, EXCEPT Kazehaya, the love interest. BOY you done bored me. This guy is so boring and such a wuss, and I swear even the animation team felt that way too, because at some points this guy was drawn like a side character.
The real highlight was the friendship, because every damn time romance was at the forefront, some terribly roundabout misunderstanding would happen. I'm not saying misunderstandings don't happen
...
in real life, but man, the characters take an astronomical amount of time to resolve their problems. Like any romantic action will take 5 episodes. Sawako gotta spend an episode thinking about it, an episode consulting her friends, an episode worrying about it, an episode doing it, an episode fixing a misunderstanding. IT'S TOO MUCH.
If I was a teenager with social anxiety watching this on television in the 2010s, I would love this. Unfortunately, I'm a grown adult with 2025 patience.
I would still like to mention some things I love about this: the old technology, the art style, the characters, the music, the visuals, the outfits, the voice acting, the natural passage of time.
Some bad things: the pacing, sucky Kazehaya, the lack of consequences for out of line characters...

Kind of like the Demon Slayer of the slice of life shoujo world...(in terms of plot, mystery and humour)
I think Fruits Baskets has a lot going for it: It is rich in character complexity, metaphors and style. The animation style is pretty and quaint which I find very fitting for the main character Tohru. I like her origin story, and how that led to her hardworking and resistant personality.
Not to go into a full psychoanalysis, but Tohru is a prime example of a people pleaser. While most shoujo heroines have that trait, to some extent, the series makes it a point to explore her paradoxical
...
selfishness. Covert and overt selfishness are represented by Tohru and Akito. Since Tohru's characterization is central to the premise of the plot, I do not have any complaints about her moral nature. However, making her cry and spiral into self-hatred every couple episodes is truly redundant, and it does a disservice to her character development. The drama that's worthwhile in the show is found in the psychology, the tension and the polarity of the characters; but it often steers towards melodrama (i.e. long gloomy crying scenes, omnipresent self-blame, etc...).
I liked that every episode had a purpose. Moreover, each character gives their interpretation of the themes: grief, self-doubt, trauma, hierarchy, traditionalism and conservatism. Of course, the series is not above the classic "pure maiden who's kindness which transcends humanity fixes abused men" trend of the 2000s.
It's a difficult series to complete-- It's a slow burn which uncovers more and more grime as the series goes on. There is a lot a viewer can reflect on from watching this, but it is also at times childish and unfunny. That is why I feel like the combined mystery and childish humour makes this the Demon Slayer of slice of life shoujo

This anime does a disservice to the source material with its flat humour and ugly aesthetics.
While I understand that being a yaoi anime doesn't lend to the biggest budget, the colour palette was honestly vile. Everything from the clothes to the environment was this murky grey or dirty blue. Yes, corporate places are monochromatic, but even the romantic date scenes were realised very poorly. The premise is funny in the first two episodes, but the humour quickly becomes monotonous. When the 2nd couple was announced, I lost interest so bad and by the time the main couple had their first date, I lost the
...
goodwill in my heart to continue.
There is nothing holding this anime together but the hopes and dreams of fujoshis. Unfortunately, the boys love community has very little to gain from such tasteless adaptations.

Literally 10x better than Your Name but maybe I do (reluctantly) agree with the fact that the plot was stringed together in a messy way. The history behind the Closers is brushed over: the old fart in the hospital barely did anything for the plot, although he was a senior Closer that could've helped in making sense of the fantasy part. The whole dead mother thing is also a cliché and oftentimes I did feel like the story was using the sappiness as a sufficient plot device to make this movie a drama. As for the romance aspect, I'm pretty sure people would complain either
...
way-- since it was pretty understated, people are making it a point of criticism, but if the movie leaned more towards romance, then you'd have people complain about the age gap. Either way, I expected as much romance as from a Ghibli movie (for kids).
The visuals were obviously redundant for this type of movie, but what else are they gonna animate? This movie definitely felt more magical and wholesome than any other fantasy young love drama I've seen, which is why I believe this is BETTER than Your Name.
