Psychological-Horror greenhorns may accrue fervor for this genre by virtue of copacetic presentation & easily digestible complexity. If one is in complete intacta I could understand the high praise for this anime, this show holds up to it's contemporaries of the time.
The unique approach on visual style adds even more atmosphere to it than one would think. I'm just not a fan of the constant short clips/scenes pieced together to reach a stories' climactic events quicker. Your audience needs carefully orchestrated scenario-canoodling for the climactic moments to have the impact you want, otherwise it comes off as shock value material.
At least it's
...
not laden with tropes & common cliché's... which is refreshing. Somewhere between the execution of this anime and the 2019 version's approach would have been perfect. Because 2019 is more about psychological suspense, characters engaging in philosophical exploration while under pressure & deep emotional baggage.
At least this one is more mysterious and arguably a better adaptation to what was intended in the source material. The 2019 version is just an added encyclopedic experience. I suggest watching them in release order to fully experience the connections to each anime properly. I did it chronologically; despite not letting the new one affect my taste for the older one, I regretted watching it this way.

I'm going to be honest here and say that it sure doesn't do anything new or too complicated, it certainly is not a big deal if you skip this one. Although we are too diverse on this planet for me to justify this by continuing on that tangent.
The first third of this series is essentially what you get out of most mech anime's, sure go through my anime list and you won't find many of them yet I've seen enough to feel comfortable saying this. It doesn't try to lure you in with their action scenes, yet they are decent enough to not
...
make you want to switch it off. So yeah, action isn't the focus even though it is needed for the story, and honestly it's not that bad.
For the second third it may start to feel like a sitcom; I was impressed to see how possible it could be in this art medium yet I can understand most people being thrown off by this. The story doesn't get left in the back burner or anything, it just can cause sunder in most viewers which is understandable. Since the story focuses on connection, relationships and love... I feel like it's apropos to split the show into distinct parts that in some ways seem different. Any relationship a person comes across has stages of change like that as well, they just happen and you either adapt, grow closer or part ways. Fitting... is it not?
The third and final part is about change, the choices that present themselves from gaining new knowledge and understanding. Finding the where-with-all within the self and others in uncharted territories. Learning from mistakes instead of dreading them.
Interesting to note; the 1st part is unsurety, the 2nd is complacency and the 3rd is evolution.
I won't shy people away from this story and I don't recommend it either. There are many other darling stories out there for people to connect with, and that's the thing... if you do connect, it's a beautiful thing.

If it were Directed by Quentin Tarantino; Produced by Guy Ritchie, with the style & flare of Takashi Miike's Sukiyaki Western Django - you get Akiba Maid War.
Very unique experience in viewership and what an incredible rollercoaster it was. It blended elements from a plethora of styles & influences yet still managed to create something exceptionally unique. It also didn't overstep any element within it's arsenal. Listing everything would just spoil it... plus this is a review, not a dead give away. I haven't found any uninteresting characters, even those with short lifespans; every character served their purpose well for this
...
magnificent tale and I swear this will be one difficult to forget.
It was fabricated seamlessly for multiple viewing as well; making the "you got to see this" vibe very easy to do without worrying about being bored doing so. I just finished it and rewatch I will, soon too.
I don't care what anyone likes or dislikes on this platform; watch it, for real.

Ok... I get it. So game player designed his character to be Keanu Reeves as Demon Lord in name only because he seems quite normal and palatable in comparison to people from this isekai realm. It's nice to see that the main character doesn't juggle between treating people like a game or taking the world seriously... I was getting tired of that trope although some other anime's did that well mind you.
Here that wouldn't have fit very well. I'm getting some Log Horizon vibes here; it started magnificently then became a SIMS game for awhile. At least it didn't make the
...
OP character boast to us the viewers for every episode by rehashing victory after victory. His goals clearly need more than power and muscle to achieve so I can see the point of the direction. The comedy is awesome although they do skim close to repetitiveness. Not quite mind you so close call, I'll have to watch season 2 to fully grasp what their take is so far so fingers crossed that it doesn't flop during this half because it didn't end on a high note per say.
I wrote this because people had to know "if they didn't catch it" that he's basically Keanu Reeves, if you wanted to see Keanu in an isekai here's your chance... enjoy lol.

Take Violet & Daisy (2011) - give them Gun Kata from Equilibrium (2002) - with the setup of Gunslinger Girl - and a relationship akin to Buddy Cop Films - place them in a future Utopian City less incriminated & controlling than Psycho-Pass (so far anyway), think rectify instead of avert - you get Lycoris Recoil.
I wasn't expecting this to be as good as it was. From episode 1 I was locked in and it managed to keep me locked in until the end. The action was great and it was awesome to see it wasn't just added in to attract viewers.
...
The slice of life moments were great too, the comedy wasn't forced and seemed natural to the moments/conversations especially by not repeating themselves on that front.
The characters were well thought out as well. Not one-dimensional, parodies or caricatures of cliché "go to" formula's. Are they relatable to other characters that have been seen? of course; such is story telling and humans only have 76 personality types so quantifiably, even people in reality can get a bit familiar after reading/watching many stories along with getting older. Sorry I digress yet what I have just said you can see in the characters in this story, the older characters act like "9 to 5 again!" and the lycoris are giving their all to become what they want to be.
Many people who enjoy deep concepts without having the dialogue being too pretentious and complicated will certainly enjoy it just as much as those who can read between the many contextual lines presented for those who can. And honestly, it makes it realistic, it trusts the audience can comprehend without having the characters explain obvious choices and actions.

Simply awesome and divine. I enjoyed this anime from start to finish. Keep in mind I found out about it only recently and binged it right away. I'm fortunate for not caring about reviews/spoilers or what social media is chirping about until I finish the story. I don't allow "group think psychology" to get in the way of my personal taste and enjoyment of art - not before, during or after the show. That type of thinking belongs at work, at schools, in public because that's the purpose group think serves.
This show was great at showing the duality of each
...
character. Whether good or bad as a medium of choice, you are presented with the dichotomy for every character they focused on, obviously not for certain one's because we didn't get there in the story yet. Also for some characters it's subtle yet still well presented; obviously the story isn't complete and people forget that if all questions are answered, the next addition is then a sequel and not a continuation. A first season of an anime is just the beginning of the story and the plot hasn't started rising yet. Sure there's a secondary full plot to clearly have a start and finish... that's writing in a nutshell. But this one is going to get intense and only better with more seasons.
Definitely not a waste of time for most who will watch and I've seen other magical school anime's, this one is great compared to its peers.
You want Harry Potter? watch that... or read it even.
I get it; magic school.
Like every movie with an elf, dwarf, humans and a wizard reminds them of Lord of The Rings.
Pepsi? Coca-Cola? blah blah blah.

This show I enjoy watching despite never being one I loved or favorited. The comedy was great, awesome premise from season 1.
So this is coming from a non fan stand point. They missed the mark in this season. It was blatant and obvious in early episodes. I finished it anyway, laughed sure but where is the sustenance this season. Ouch to those who put a lot of effort in making it. Great ideas executed poorly unfortunately.
I'm not gonna pick apart why because everyone will get their own interpretation and some loved it for sure and we can't blame them,
...
tastes are individualistic.
All I'm saying is that if a non avid lover of this show can tell this season was a mismark it speaks volumes. Sure I laughed and all that but everything else... eesh.
Might not be so bad if you know that before going in, maybe, who knows. I can only speak my truth.
Those who despise it, I understand.
Those who are on the fence and still want to give season 4 a chance like me, that's cool.
Those who love it, thank you for giving us the opportunity to get a 4th season.

If you break down all it's aspects it doesn't do much of anything groundbreaking or top tier per say. What it does do well though is how it presents itself with the sum of it's parts compared to it's contemporaries, the very definition of gestalt. Sure I gave it a 9 but that is due to my personal taste of liking something unique and/or wished to stand apart from the oversaturated influx of clones.
In both Sub & Dub they managed to successfully achieve a unique method which honestly is quite refreshing. Not best work ever heard; just more akin to the best
...
B-movies, giving it a strong impression. For everything in this series, trying something new paid off.
Crimson is a show stealer; always acting different so you can't pigeon-hold him/her in any way and it's quite delightful when you think about it, especially that it doesn't impede on his/her character progression. I appreciate that difficult writing. Plus Crimson is the one you'll find yourself wanting to know most about and see where her future lies; not out of favoritism, just by how it's presented.
Ragna is the anti-trope; a trope still, just not in the ways we're used to so it's somewhat refreshing. His situation is a trichotomy: 1 - Trying to find out who he is because before he was content being a mutual slave. 2 - His future self gave him all the answers and powers yet discovery/triggers is still needed for effectiveness. 3 - Together with knowing most of everything + discovering who he is, gives him an equal share of perks and disadvantages.
The Main Dragons we're great in their own rite as well. Incredibly written and presented so it makes us think "more amazing enemies are coming in later seasons". It's quite convincing because they weren't just plot devices and had depth.
The banter between characters in this series is magnificent. Makes the light hearted parts shine as much as the rest.
There are so many different fighting styles showcased in anime so in any series some will like it, some won't. Others like a lot of different one's for different reasons, I get that. With that said, the fight's are showcased like it's from a different anime every time; each one is distinct in style, choreography, presentation, etc. Made it fun actually.
I didn't want to pause this show if I didn't have to and I wasn't doing anything else until it was binged entirely... if I didn't have to.

The only 2 good things this show has is comedy and power concepts. The comedy isn't top notch per say, it is decent enough to get some guaranteed laughs though. The power system is a great idea; it wasn't used to it's maximum potential, more ways to use powers than just kissing for example or a longer story could have presented a variety of situations where the powers were more than just a plot device.
The story beats pass by way too quickly; this in turn compromises the mystery aspects and makes everything solvable before the show presents it's ta-dah moments. I think
...
you can tell no-one took this project seriously when both sub and dub voice actors sound like they rushed through it and/or just kept their first take.
I'm not suggesting a slow pace like Monster Anime; I'm just saying this story would have benefitted from the plot being taken seriously and more flushed out. Although the aim may have been to use such a serious premise to present it in a more light hearted fashion or the manga may have had a plot that wasn't so rushed.
Oh well; not like it's my demographic anyway, although I do remember being in that demographic and I would have thought the same then.

Betwixt premise conception and concept adaptation lies a philosophical passion which exudes brilliance. With the absence of hell and demons it becomes clear that anathema can coincide with peace in empyrean domains; duality itself is part of any form of existence, creation and creators... divine or not. It can be said that this series is the most beautiful Shakespearean tragedy to ever grace a visual format. Keep in mind I haven't read the manga though, so I may not know what changes were possibly made or if anything was missing or taken out. So from this perspective my disposition is that
...
of a naive spoiled audience with lack of knowledge on the source material. Despite that it isn't fair to say my opinion is not valid as that would be a foolish claim of privileged self congratulatory backslappers who selfishly believe their experience would be the only way to understand this material.
Also, keeping the "power system" basic worked for this type of story telling. Going in depth with it would simply deter the audiences' focus from philosophizing about the various concepts this story presents in every moment. Instead it's like rock paper scissors; seems basic until you analyze the psychological trichotomy of choices that are imposed within it's modus operandi, in my opinion it eliminated a simplistic dualistic concept like heaven vs hell which always places humanity in the middle as a casualty.
Bottom line, A modern day allegorical masterpiece pervaded in metaphorical parables akin to an eye/mind opening documentary. If the audience decides to interpret it straightfowardly without dissecting & analyzing the narrative, they will be left with askew interpretations of the exposé. Alternatively if they descry the diegesis which exhibits perfect exemplum to any prospect; then it has fulfilled it's role, which is in service to the people. Genius incarnations are seldom bestowed upon our fickle existence which presents edification from a performance of artistic entertainment.
At the very least exercise this while watching: what your thoughts think, what your thoughts feel, what your feelings think, what your feelings feel, and remember that the characters are trying to do the same. Although it may be impossible to ignore the negative consequences of positive sound decisions which most humans never realize even exists - it will all be clear once you reach the end credits of episode 24.
