Thanks for all the Japanese learning tips, but all those dialects, ChatGPT/AI, it went over my head. I'm still in the basics stage, and I'm also not actively putting in any effort to learn, not at least now. However, I was really amazed when reading that, made me realize how good and advanced you're at Japanese.

I've watched some anime RAW, and a part of that with learning Japanese in mind, just how you described. But then I have to make a decision, do I want to watch anime for entertainment purposes, or as studying material for learning Japanese? For me, it can't be both at the same time, I've tried. Because if I choose to watch anime RAW when there are subs available, it then becomes a lesson rather than entertainment. I can understand like 40-50% of what they say, but if I miss all the important points and plot developments, then there was no entertainment value there, it was a lesson. And finally, anime is the only thing in my life I truly enjoy doing in my free time, and if I turn that into a Japanese lesson, I fear I then start to hate anime, and that would be disastrous. I've learned some Japanese passively watching it with English subs and will continue to do so, but for learning purposes I would mainly want to use something else, rather than my only enjoyable entertainment format and risk losing that by turning it to not fun lessons.

I learned English well before they started to teach it in elementary school, I was okay at English maybe in 3rd grade, and they didn't start to teach it until 5th grade. English was the only school subject I was good at, and most of it was learnt by watching English spoken TV programs a whole ton. My favorite shows as a kid were Friends, Simpsons, and a huge amount of movies, mostly horror. About 80-90% of Finnish people speak English, it's the most popular second language.

Well, I thought too Vinland Saga for its name would have something to do with Finland, but it actually doesn't at all. It has Danish, British, Icelandic, and maybe some Swedish people/regions in it, but no Finnish, probably because Finland didn't have almost anything to do with Vikings which the anime focuses on. The only 2 animes that I've watched that heavily have to do with Finland were Makiba no Shoujo Katri and Fin-Tan, Fin-Tan is really bad, but Makiba no Shoujo Katri was enjoyable to watch and presents old rural Finland well, also it belongs to the World Masterpiece Theatre anime series. Other anime just may have some Finnish characters in them, they mention Finland, or sometimes briefly visit. Girls und Panzer has a lot of Finnish stuff in it, like characters, tank, they play Kantele which is a Finnish-invented music instrument, and I think they visit Finland at some point, it was the main reason I wanted to watch the show.

It was fun to message you again, I'm bad at asking questions, but I'll be happy to answer yours if you want to ask anything.

Sorry it took a while for me to answer, I just have to take a break from social activities sometimes when it gets too overwhelming, it has nothing to do with you, it's my illnesses.

Wow, that's awesome that you're fluent in Japanese! I've also studied some Japanese, I know more or less all Hiragana, Katakana but only a handful of Kanji. I can't speak at all, and some I can understand listening. But because of my condition, studying is very hard, and I can't do it consistently, and when learning a language consistency is key. Every time you take a break, you pretty much have to start learning almost from the beginning. One thing too is that English is not my native language, and the only studying material I can find is in English. Finnish language is very minor, only 5 million people, no Japanese learning material is found in my native language, at least free, so when studying Japanese, I have to translate Japanese to English, and then to Finnish, there is an annoying extra step.

I can predict anime more or less, that's why I find anime that are out of the norm or do something different more interesting. There are plenty of clichés where a character does or says something, there's a set response to that, which happens 99% of the time. I have a real lack of imagination, so no to that of making my own story. That's also a reason why I like anime more compared to say books, or audio, 'cause I have a hard time imagining how things look when only described.

I'm sorry to hear that you've been bedridden. Sometimes when I play 3D games, especially ones which have the camera behind the character, I get dizzy and seasick quickly, but never when just watching TV or anime. I don't listen to Japanese outside of anime, most Japanese I've learned is from anime, some from studying. I mostly listen to anisongs, Gundam, Detective Conan, Initial D, Macross, City Hunter to say a few has awesome songs. The best anisongs come from 80s-90s series, but there are many modern ones I like too.

Yeah, you can't see my list on mobile, I use PC to put in all my entries on MAL. One reason for that too is because I put tags and notes on all my entries, and you can't do that on mobile. I loved 'To Your Eternity', the first episode made me literally cry, it was like a short movie. The second season wasn't as good, maybe because it lost some of its mystery, but it was still a masterpiece in my books. It makes me glad that you asked me questions, you're very good at making an interesting conversation. I'm terrible at asking someone questions and making up a conversation, so I'm sorry that I mostly talk about myself, which is a self-aware issue.

Yeah, I love it how you can discover new things every time you rewatch Overlord, and via that you realize how much depth is in all the character mannerism, the way they say certain stuff, etc. Like the reason why Albedo doesn't like calling Ainz by his new name, but instead as Momonga. There's a good BD version now online for the 4th movie, so definitely you should rewatch. I don't really keep up with the news about the series, I just watch when a new entry appears.

There was a point in my life, somewhere around 2020-2022, when I woke up at 6-8am and watched anime till about midnight every single day. I did only the bare necessities and some days went on walks. During that time I probably watched 300 days worth of anime and about 2000–3000 series altogether. I realized that was really unhealthy and have now dialed down a lot of anime watching for the last couple of years. I watch about, give or take 6 hours a day nowadays. I live on benefits because of my illnesses, so that's why I have so much time. Anime is really the one thing in my life I truly love doing, and it's the only hobby that persisted from my childhood to adulthood.

I don't know if these are really that hidden gems, but I looked over your list, and you didn't have these watched, which I will recommend. Juubee Ninpuuchou, a dark and brutal 90s movie. Gungrave, dark series with good animation, badass characters, and gun combat. Blood-C, also a dark series with bloody action, the story might be a bit of a mess though. Those are just some off the top of my head that I saw you haven't watched, so I can't guarantee you'll like them, but they all aren't that long, so give them a try.
Aikalukko Oct 7, 2025 10:39 PM
Oh wow! You've watched Overlord even more than I have, I have watched the 1st season 5 times and the rest less than that. I've watched many of my favorite series twice, some thrice, but there's something so entertaining and addicting about Overlord that is very rewatchable time and time again. The newest movie was amazing too, I thought it was just a recap like the rest of the movies but no, it's technically a sequel which was a huge surprise. Oh, and thanks for the friend request!
