hello im pato :p i enjoy reading more than watching shows lately bc anime pacing can get stale but i really enjoy technical aspects of animation so it has higher ceilings for me, especially with non-manga elements like sound design and direction. fav studios are gainax, madhouse, 4°C, science saru & shaft. Some of my personal favorite mangakas are nobuyuki fukumoto, kenji tsuruta, and keiichi koike (kaiji, emanon, ultra heaven) and more popular ones like urasawa or junji ito.
outside of anime/manga my favorite authors are haruki murakami and stephen king, i've read most of their stuff my favorites being 1Q84 and any of kings short story collections/misery. I like a24 movies (lol) and gaspar noe stuff; pretentious blueprint basically.
i like biking and bouldering & am into streetwear, my fav brands are braindead, stray rats and golf :p also really like music
Blame! - insane setting and character design, worldbuilding it can convey without dialogue is super impressive, unique and engaging
Tatami Galaxy - yuasa creating and defying rules constantly on top of great aesthetic and writing; stellar directing, design, & humor
Bakuman - a hyperfixation i have opened up and studied, really loved pushing boundaries of shonen by making it about manga itself
End of Evangelion - self explanatory. nothing i say will be breaking new ground but to echo: amazing in animation and conceptually
Omoide Emanon - the sort of slice of life i like, unique and strong concept, tone, & artstyle; felt soft in a very emotive & human way
FLCL - aesthetic while dynamic: a good example of advantage anime has with sound design/direction bc pillows & gainax elevate this
Oyasumi Punpun - again, self explanatory. but it resonated deeply and the way it's written and delivered are two separate positives
Belladonna of Sadness - the style of every character, the animation itself, the psychedelia and messaging is great especially in 70's
Berserk - epitome of taste defining, grew up reading it and it set the bar for manga & in turn anime really high which i'm grateful for
Angels Egg - appeals to me a lot, lets questions stay unanswered or ambiguous &the aesthetic is great with detailed hand animation
i weigh some aspects more heavily than others, i focus on art/animation, writing, and also style. generally speaking this is the metric i use for scoring, but theres no rubric i follow sometimes things just resonate despite flaws:
10 - changed perspective on how i view the medium
9 - something which resonates deeply/was transformative but i recognize at least one major flaw
8 - benchmark for great, between ambiance, art, style, & writing; multiple elements are done well enough to give lasting impression
7-5 - varying degrees of 'good' from 'enjoyable but flawed' to 'textbook and forgettable'
4-1 - varying degrees of 'bad' from 'vapid and grating' to 'offensive'
(thx for reading all of this ^o^ <3 :) )
open to suggestions if you like something a lot - from music to books or shows i'll check out whatever just lmk ^__^;;
yeahhh Jojo is really good but the beginning is the worst, I even almost gave up on it the first time but honestly it's worth it 100%. I can't wait for part 6 to fully air because the first 12 eps were so good and I just love Jolyne and Hermes tbh. Parts 4 and 5 are actually good and I think you'd like them because they have fun characters and the plots are just random af. It's so funny how every part is in a new country or place and you can't really predict that beforehand.
yesss plz do read Innocent, not only is the art amazing but also the story is just as good and I don't want to spoil it for you but it never got boring. I've yet to read innocent rouge but I'm not mentally ready to finish it just yet xD
Also, I suggest the anime the rose of versailles because its around the same period but it has a completely different plot. The main characters are similar in way but not really and I can't elaborate because I'd have to ruin it for u. So we can discuss that later when ur done with them.
If you do end up watching or reading any of them I'd love to hear ur thoughts!
Enjoy!!!
Not letterboxd XD but thanks!
yeah it's a pretty good film and I agree with your point and that's a really good way to put it.
Let me know which ones ur willing to check out because I'd just say go for all of my favorites in whatever order you like. I'm not sure if you'd really like them and I don't want to disappoint you because some of them are just my favorites for sentimental reasons and they could be boring.
I really like Jojos Bizzare Adventure because each arc is different in terms of the setting, characters, and plot but still connected because it's about one family. Also, for some reason the protagonists are boring but their friends are more interesting and funny most of the time so it makes you connect with the characters in a way.
I think its safe to recommed that first xD
I see that you really liked belladonna of sadness, it's a pretty good film. I think I was more infatuated by the cover for a while before I check it out and I wasn't disappointed at all. It's so underrated but I think the story was just too depressing for me so I gave it a lower score. Also, I liked it because it relates to women's medieval experiences, and there aren't many films on that.
I've tried watching some of your favorites before but I just didn't continue watching them for some reason.
Your favorites are really cool!

ps with mushishi i felt the same way, but it was just so so good and every episode was so touching and interesting. i feel like the spiritual/supernatural world represented thru animation can be so beautiful, i really appreciate it and love it a lot (although i am kind of partial to episodic anime, so make of that what you will 'nd take it with a grain of salt; im a lil biased ).
as for ur anime reccs u r so right yuasa should always be prioritized i like the way u think i'll watch mind game asap, FLCL too god ive been meaning to watch all those for so long i dont even have the excuse that it's intimidating to start bc they're all so short
yay im so glad u watched those, love paradise kiss and kaiba so much hope u did too
and yes same i would love reccs from u i'd be way more willing to get back into anime (kind of in a rut rn, just reading and watching movies atm) if i know it's something im bound to like.
another recc from me would be mushishi i think you'd really like it, especially if you enjoyed mononoke
as for music, im actually really curious as to wht u would recommend so pls do lol i luv any and all music as long as it's interesting yk?, i think you'd like siouxsie and the banshees? their album juju is rlly good. u might like veruca salt too🤔 idk lmk
aw omg thanks so much, and same to you you're honestly the person with the closest taste to mine on this site, i appreciate your partialness to the art aspect, i'm also very style-driven
Thanks for adding me, loved reading through your profile, seeing all the care you put into your page, I appreciate that kind of stuff. Also checking out a little bit of these Spotify playlists ᕕ(⌐■_■)ᕗ ♪♬
Tatami is most definitely going to be the next anime I'm going to watch since you are now the fourth person that said it captures my taste well so I am guessing it is simply a sign I've got to get on it xd. To be honest I never really thought deeply on what I enjoy or find great but you might have captured it perfectly, designs, use of colors, referential are some perfect ways to describe my taste! Colour palette is without a doubt the first thing that grasps me, one of the main reasons I disliked code geass 😭.
Punpun is definitely a piece that I know I need to experience, when I'm going to do that I dunno I think I'm subconsciously preparing for it simply because of how depressing I have heard it is. I definitely get what you mean, the majority of my 19 days of reading comes from one piece and there is just an incredible amount of stuff I want to read but school work is a lot especially after starting my A-Levels that I just don't have the time to read any manga. I am currently reading a book called 'Red Rising' and so far it is actually phenomenal and it's been a joy since I've only recently gotten into books and literature as a whole tbh. I regret being that snobby kid that just disliked any form of reading lmao.
