This is a list of anime that I feel would be good for those just starting out their anime journey. All the anime are very easy to watch and thus fit what would be good for someone just starting out.
Akatsuki no Yona
TV, 2014, 24 eps Me:- Author:9
Shoujo/Romance series of the Fantasy/Romance/Action/Adventure genres. It's only a portion of the manga and the manga only gets better so highly recommend that after you finish the series. This series very much shows the growth of the FL from being a naive know-nothing princess to a survivor who will do what it takes, not only to survive and have her friends survive, but to do what she can to protect her country and her people as she learns first hand what a terrible ruler her father was (even as she still loves and misses him).
Akatsuki no Yona OVA
OVA, 2015, 3 eps Me:- Author:9
These are canon OVA's (though the Zeno arc is a bit re-arranged and comes up different in the manga, it's still true to his past) so if you're a fan of the series and have watched the main part of the anime then definitely watch this as well.
Ansatsu Kyoushitsu
TV, 2015, 22 eps Me:- Author:7
Shounen series about a bunch of kids who are basically the bottom of the barrel who are given the task to save the world by killing their teacher who is a yellow octopus like guy who is also the best teacher they've ever had. It has two seasons and is an easy and fun watch.
Ao no Exorcist
TV, 2011, 25 eps Me:- Author:5
Now despite the fact that the ending of this first season is not canon, it's still a very good anime for beginners and this series DOES have a second season, though it'll be confusing a bit since the second season picks up from the canon bit and disregards the anime original parts that were added to the end of the first season. Despite that, it's a decent (if average) series and definitely a good start for those just starting out.
Bakuman.
TV, 2010, 25 eps Me:- Author:8
This is a Shounen Rom-Com (more focused on Comedy and Drama) series though romance is kind of more in the background as this series is very much focused on the JOURNEY of these two boys and their various friends that they meet along the way whose journeys are similar to their own in becoming mangaka. The series has a delightful cast of secondary characters and three seasons. It's also a COMPLETE series. And it's by the creator of Death Note.
Boku dake ga Inai Machi
TV, 2016, 12 eps Me:- Author:6
Like it or hate it this is very much a series that appeals to beginners and although I'm not fond of the ending of the series the rest of it was very much worth the watch so if you're just starting out I definitely recommend this one! A man finds someone close to him murdered (I'm not ruining who, just watch) and the murder is pinned on him. But then he finds himself 18 years back in time. A time period in which one of his classmates goes missing and then is found murdered. This is his journey in, not only, trying to save his classmate, but the person close to him who was murdered as well.
Boku no Hero Academia
TV, 2016, 13 eps Me:- Author:6
This series has multiple seasons and is basically a generic shounen, which are very easy watches for beginners. This is a super hero/villain centric shounen so if that's your thing then you'll probably enjoy this.
Cardcaptor Sakura
TV, 1998, 70 eps Me:- Author:6
This is a mahou shoujo series (Magical Girl). It's a very good series to start off to see if you'd enjoy something from the genre. It's an easy watch (even if it's a tad bit longer with 70 episodes. Not including sequels).
D.Gray-man
TV, 2006, 103 eps Me:- Author:7
Now, people may say "watch Naruto, watch One Piece, watch Bleach, etc." when it comes to longer shounen series, but D.Gray-man was my first venture into longer shounen and I watched all 103 episodes straight through with no sleep. It was close to two days and I crashed afterward lol. Worth it though. This is a very good longer shounen and definitely appealing for beginners. It also has a short sequel with more upgraded animation (I was just irritated by the new VA for Kanda. And the new art style for him as well...)
Dororo
TV, 2019, 24 eps Me:- Author:8
You may hear the name Tezuka Osamu bandied about as 'the God of Manga'. Dororo is based on one of his many manga series that is from 1967. The man himself died in 1989. This is a fantastic series and perfect for someone new or old to anime to watch. This is actually one that I HIGHLY recommend!
Dr. Stone
TV, 2019, 24 eps Me:- Author:6
Modern world accident causes everyone to go back to the stone age and one genius boy who is trying to modernize the stone world as much as he can.
Dungeon ni Deai wo Motomeru no wa Machigatteiru Darou ka
TV, 2015, 13 eps Me:- Author:5
This series reminds me of an isekai series without actually being an isekai series. I think that's why so many people find it appealing. Definitely a good start for those just starting off.
Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
TV, 2009, 64 eps Me:- Author:8
Without a doubt one of the best series for beginners and one of the best shounen out there. I would actually recommend starting the original Fullmetal Alchemist for the first 20 or so eps before starting this (but that's just me) simply because it gives more details on certain parts of the storyline that are more glossed over here, but it isn't necessary to do that if you don't feel like it. FMAB is a good series whether you're new to anime or not.
Gakuen Alice
TV, 2004, 26 eps Me:- Author:6
Shoujo series based on a bunch of kids with powers who go to a special school for kids with powers. It's a cute series.
Gin no Saji
TV, 2013, 11 eps Me:- Author:9
This is a slice of life series and a good introduction to the SOL genre. It's by the creator of FMAB.
Haikyuu!!
TV, 2014, 25 eps Me:- Author:8
This is a great introduction for newbies or even veteran anime fans to the sports genre. This series is based on volleyball and has an incredible cast of side characters as well as a great main cast!
Horimiya
TV, 2021, 13 eps Me:- Author:7
A shounen-romance series with a slight slice of life feel. Now, they really did condense a lot of the manga into this short 13 episode series so if, by chance, you've read the entire manga then you may not like the series, but if you haven't then you very well may enjoy this one. I, personally, really like this series and feel it's a great start for beginners and even some veteran anime viewers.
Hunter x Hunter (2011)
TV, 2011, 148 eps Me:- Author:7
Another longer shounen that is not only great for beginners, but veteran anime fans as well. Definitely give this one a go as it's one of the better shounen out there.
InuYasha
TV, 2000, 167 eps Me:- Author:6
Time-travel shounen that kind of feels like an isekai series without it actually being isekai. It's a fun series and also one of the longer shounen out there that I recommend for beginners to try. It's something you can watch slowly or in between other things. And it has a sequel. And side series sequels.
Itai no wa Iya nanode Bougyoryoku ni Kyokufuri Shitai to Omoimasu.
TV, 2020, 12 eps Me:- Author:6
Another series for beginners that feels like an isekai without it being isekai. About a girl playing a game who doesn't want to get hurt so ups her defense until her defense basically becomes godly lol.
Kaichou wa Maid-sama!
TV, 2010, 26 eps Me:- Author:7
Shoujo Rom-Com which was one of my very first anime so, of course, I'm going to recommend it to beginners because I used to be absolutely OBSESSED with this series! It still holds a special place in my heart even if I can now see it's flaws that I didn't before. A great starter romance for those just starting out.
Kaleido Star
TV, 2003, 51 eps Me:- Author:8
This shoujo is based around an acrobatic circus so it's kind of like a shoujo sports anime. It's a bit long being 51 episodes, but it's a great anime that I recommend for both veterans and beginners!
Kimetsu no Yaiba
TV, 2019, 26 eps Me:- Author:6
Yes, this series is a great one for beginners. It has great animation, interesting characters, and an interesting plot. Yes, it's flawed, but for beginners it's a great start and, honestly, I enjoy it.
Kiseijuu: Sei no Kakuritsu
TV, 2014, 24 eps Me:- Author:7
This is a great introduction to horror anime. A series about aliens that come to take over the planet and a boy and the alien that tried to take him over as they try to survive in a planet that is becoming more and more dangerous for them as the aliens would kill them both were they to know what happened to them.
Kuroko no Basket
TV, 2012, 25 eps Me:- Author:7
This is another sports anime that is good for those just starting out. It's a basketball series and a very fun watch. Has three seasons.
Little Witch Academia (TV)
TV, 2017, 25 eps Me:- Author:7
Basically Harry Potter-esk but the MC is female. And so is basically the entire cast (basically. Andrew is one such exception). Very good for those starting out.
Log Horizon
TV, 2013, 25 eps Me:- Author:6
This is an isekai series that is a good one for beginners. Based on a bunch of players who find themselves in the world of a video game they played (sounds familiar right? It's better than SAO though, so there's that).
Made in Abyss
TV, 2017, 13 eps Me:- Author:7
Made in Abyss is a great Mystery/Adventure series with the slightest little touch of Horror to make for a good series for beginners and veterans alike.
Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic
TV, 2012, 25 eps Me:- Author:6
A Shounen/Action/Adventure series that is a great series for those starting off. Has a great cast of side characters in addition to the MC's and an interesting storyline.
Magi: Sinbad no Bouken (TV)
TV, 2016, 13 eps Me:- Author:7
This is a prequel series to the above. It's based around one of the side characters in the above series. The character Sinbad. You can watch this series first or the above series first, but both are worth the watch.
Maoujou de Oyasumi
TV, 2020, 12 eps Me:- Author:8
Comedy/Fantasy series with strong Slice of Life feel. A great series to watch for those who need an introduction to slower paced anime as it works great to see if you'd enjoy slice of life series. Very cute and funny series.
Mirai Nikki (TV)
TV, 2011, 26 eps Me:- Author:5
Now, while I feel like this series is average, at best, it's a great watch for those just starting out. Plus, you get introduced to your first yandere character via Yuno.
Naruto
TV, 2002, 220 eps Me:- Author:7
This is a very long and very flawed shounen series. But despite it's flaws, the characters (minus the majority of the females. Tsunade being one of the few exceptions) are interesting and really hold the series together INSPITE of it's gaping holes and asspulls. The fillers are not that bad in the first season, but the second season (Shippuuden) you can either be annoyed by the random asf fillers or find a site that tells you the fillers and just skip them (I watched them like an idiot and got annoyed by 90% of the fillers). It's a great starter series though.
Noragami
TV, 2014, 12 eps Me:- Author:5
Another shounen that's a good starter. The OP's in both series are amazing so I highly recommend not skipping them (I skip most OP's. Not all. I give them a first listen and if I like them then I continue to listen to them, but if I don't then they get skipped).
Nurarihyon no Mago
TV, 2010, 24 eps Me:- Author:6
Has two seasons and a great beginner series. It's not what I'd call 'amazing' but it's entertaining and worth a go.
One Piece
TV, 1999, ? eps Me:- Author:8
Okay, yeah. There are over a 1000+ episodes so it's extremely daunting, I'll give you that. The animation in the beginning also isn't the easiest to get used to. And the pacing of the series in the beginning is a bit slow (imo). However, this is, without a single doubt in my mine, the BEST world building I've ever seen in an anime. The MC's are fully fleshed out and the side characters are so fascinating and pop up again when you least expect it. It's a series that I definitely recommend and it's good to get into when you're just starting out. You can watch an episode here and there inbetween other things and eventually you WILL catch up. It may be a slow start, but it gets addictive when it finally hits it's stride (though it's different for everyone in which part pulls you in).
Ouran Koukou Host Club
TV, 2006, 26 eps Me:- Author:7
Another shoujo. This was the series that started the madness that is my anime addiction so, of course, I'm going to recommend it to those just starting out. It's a fun and hilarious series!
Owari no Seraph
TV, 2015, 12 eps Me:- Author:7
This is another shounen series which is great for beginners. This one focused on vampires! And two friends who grew up together who are on opposite sides of a war.
Pandora Hearts
TV, 2009, 25 eps Me:- Author:7
This is actually one of the first shounen series that I ever watched and that's one of the reasons I recommend this for beginners. The other, and main reason, is my love of Xerxes Break!
Servant x Service
TV, 2013, 13 eps Me:- Author:8
This is a good beginner Seinen series. It's a Work Life-Comedy with a touch of romance. It's one that I love to bits and that's why I recommend it! It's also got a bit of the slice of life feel so it's another good introduction for beginners to see if they'd enjoy the slice of life genre.
Shijou Saikyou no Deshi Kenichi
TV, 2006, 50 eps Me:- Author:7
Another good Shounen for beginners. And also another that veterans would enjoy as well. Based on a kid who was weak as hell who gets taken in and taught by various martial artists, well, if he can survive that is.
Shin Shirayuki-hime Densetsu Prétear
TV, 2001, 13 eps Me:- Author:6
A great introduction into the Mahou Shoujo (Magical Girl) genre.
Tennis no Oujisama
TV, 2001, 178 eps Me:- Author:8
Admittedly, an older sports anime, but this was my very first sports anime and I love it so very much! It's still in my top 10 anime of all time even after more than 10 years since I first watched it. Has a hoarde of interesting and well fleshed out main cast as well as a well written and interesting side character cast as well!
Shounen Onmyouji
TV, 2006, 26 eps Me:- Author:7
A very underrated and underwatched historical fantasy anime that would be great for beginners if they even knew that it existed (which is why I'm putting in this stack).
Shugo Chara!
TV, 2007, 51 eps Me:- Author:6
Another great introduction in the Mahou Shoujo (Magical Girl) genre. Just watch the first two seasons though and skip the third because the third season is just... weird. It's a very cute series!
Tate no Yuusha no Nariagari
TV, 2019, 25 eps Me:- Author:7
A good beginner introduction to isekai anime. Isekai (if you somehow don't know what this is) means 'another world'. So it's basically someone is transported, reincarnated, etc. into another world that is not the one they were in previously. Pre-warning, there is a character in this series (or possibly multiple) that you will want to die in humiliating or violent ways (or both). It's maddening how infuriating certain characters in this series are!
Tegamibachi
TV, 2009, 25 eps Me:- Author:6
A very cute shounen-fantasy series that is a great starter! Some iffy CGI for the 'monsters', but it's not that bad.
Tensei shitara Slime Datta Ken
TV, 2018, 24 eps Me:- Author:7
This would be my top recommendation for people wanting to try isekai anime and are beginners in anime. It's a very easy watch and fun on top of that.
Wakaokami wa Shougakusei! Movie
Movie, 2018, 1 ep Me:- Author:7
This movie is 1. underrated, and 2. feels like a Studio Ghibli movie. Which is why I recommend this one for beginners. You can watch it on Netflix if you have trouble finding it for some reason.
Yuukoku no Moriarty
TV, 2020, 11 eps Me:- Author:8
Historical, Psychological, Mystery, Suspense anime. Based loosely on Sherlock Holmes, but from his arch-nemisis Moriarty's view point. You get to see why Moriarty chooses the path that he does, why he does what he does, and, quite frankly, why he's not evil, but more an anti-hero who is neither good nor evil, but is doing what he believes is right to make the world and people in it a better place. I tend to agree with Moriarty quite a lot. He can be a bit cynical, but frankly, with the sh!t he's seen, I can see why. Highly recommend this one and it's a great one for both beginners and veterans alike.
