Best Anime of 2020
Anime
Top 10 must-watch anime from the 2020 season. List is entirely subjective, but I am a longtime anime watcher, watch a good amount of seasonal anime, and am highly critical of the shows that I consume. Nothing ranked below my personal ranking of a 7 is included in this list.
Disclaimer: Granted this is the year the pandemic hit, I will say that there were not as many standouts compared to previous years due to delays/etc. Some of these anime would not have made this list in previous years as a result.

Don't let the studio change scare you! MAPPA does a fantastic job taking on this newest arc of Attack on Titan. If you're a manga reader, rest assured this season faithfully adapts the original material. This season is when Attack on Titan takes a more mature turn, tackling militaristic issues and introducing new characters, but rest assured the story is still entertaining and thrilling as always. The animation is not always on par with what Wit could produce, but luckily the animators seem to have found their footing by the Final Season Part 2.

Another fantastic, and dare I say, even better season of Fruits Basket compared to the first. The events of this season were never animated in the original series, and TMS does a fantastic job adapting this new material! Tensions are raised higher and major secrets are revealed, all leading up to a tense climax that sets the stage for the final season. Lighthearted moments are still dispersed in between more dramatic ones to not overwhelm the viewer. Be prepared to laugh, cry, and feel every emotion watching the second season of Fruits Basket. If you haven't started the series by now, I highly recommend it.

If you haven't started watching Kaguya-sama yet, now's the time! The second season has a stronger grip on its characters and storyline compared to the first season. New characters are introduced, the jokes are funnier, and there's a showstopper episode in this season that is entirely devoid of any humor and yet does a fantastic job in its execution. This change in tone alone was enough to make me up my own personal ranking of this anime from an 8 to a 9.

If you're a fan of the original Higurashi, I highly recommend this sequel. However, I will share a disclaimer that the sequel to this series - Higurashi Sotsu - fails in comparison to this anime and delivers a boring, unsatisfactory answer arc to Gou. That being said, Gou does a fantastic job setting up a sequel storyline to the original Higurashi. The middle does drag at times, but the initial time loops pull you in, and the surprise reveal in the latter half of the series will shock you. The animation quality of Gou is certainly better compared to Studio Deen, and the original VA's return to bring new life into these characters once forgotten.

A fun, lighthearted show about girls running their own animation club. As a woman myself, I find this to be an accurate portrayal of what it's like growing up as a quirky teenage girl with quirky interests. The characters are immediately likeable, and the animation quality is stunning! A short and sweet watch.

Don't let the absurdity of this show or CGI turn you away from Dorohedoro. The characters (and the villains especially) are incredibly hilarious and likeable, the absurd humor works wonders for the worldbuilding, and surprisingly, amidst all the chaos happening in this show, the plotline is easy to follow. If you want a good laugh and some quirky fun, Dorohedoro is for you!

A wholesome yuri following the developing relationship between female high school students Adachi and Shimamura. This anime has healthy wlw representation, and, although it doesn't tackle as many queer themes as others (like Bloom Into You), Adachi and Shimamura shares a fluffy, and heartwarming romance story. No season 2 confirmed, so you'll have to turn to the light novels for a concluding story.

Yeah, yeah, you've heard of this one. As you can expect, it's another action-packed, well-animated shounen anime, this time tackling the worlds of demons and curses. The anime is humorous and dark, and the action draws you in almost immediately. Personally, I find this anime to be another overhyped shounen, and by the second arc, I was already bored with the show, but if popular battle shounen anime is your cup of tea, then I'm sure this one will be enjoyable for you!

One of the many manhwa adaptations of 2020, but certainly the best one. This action/adventure anime is a refreshing addition to the genre. The animation and battle choreography is incredibly well-done, the amazing Kevin Penkin composes the score, and the many surprise twists in this anime will have you on the edge of your seat. The story is not completely wrapped up in one season, and there has been no word of a season 2, so I recommend reading the webtoon after watching this anime.

A super fun western anime about motorcar racing. The premise is bizarre and quirky, but strangely, it works! The characters are unique and likeable, the plot is simple, yet effective, and the anime doesn't shy away from some darker themes in the latter half of the anime. It's no masterpiece by any means, but if you're looking for something lighthearted and fun to watch, give this one a try!
