Ranking Trans Representation in Anime
Anime
what the title says. some of these shows, even explicitly, do not have trans characters, but i allowed them if gender expression was a large enough theme.
there's this idea japanese art and culture is some safe haven from """woke""" shit like this, and unfortunately i've found this to be True.

every single time her gender identity is brought up, they make a point out of her masculine traits or make insanely weird assumptions about trans women. this shit is ass. the one point is for at least respecting the fact she wants to live as a woman but honestly it doesn't even deserve that; i just know it can get worse.

they appear for about 2 seconds in one scene in the entire show, and do nothing but look pretty. i needed something funny to put above skip to loafer.

the conclusion to this show made me feel like an insane person. i seriously don't fucking get it????? they spend the entire show showing them basically torturing themselves living in the closet and then at the end the conclusion they react is "i'm a boy"?? did i actually miss something???????????????? genuinely, tell me if i missed something!
if you ignore said conclusion there are some hard hitting scenes throughout (hence the score) but like, i legit think this shit is dangerously bad

frankly, could be worse?
was expecting better after a surprisingly interesting introduction but every episode onwards makes it adamant that i (the viewer) should treat najimi as a man, so. cool. very typical "representation" to me

i'm operating under the assumption at least a CHUNK of the people reading this, like me, are trans women, so i'm holding your hand and meaning love when i say this; you can do so much better.

this show dips its toes into trans identity issues, and some scenes earlier on actually hit me in the feels, but (and i'm phrasing this in a way that avoids spoilers) as the show progresses, it becomes clear the writer wasn't really doing so intentionally

maybe i'm sippin the crazy juice because i've been head over heels for this show since 2020, but the real substance of her inclusion is actually very good from a cis person's perspective.
"yeah, haha, "he's" actually a dude! woah, it's so embarrasing that okabe is dating a guy! XD" until this idea is taken very seriously: the idea of wishing you were born as a female, so a typical straight guy could truly love you, is real as hell. and the scene where she decides to #youknowwhat is so fucking depressing.
this is just my issue though; i wanted to hear more from her herself!!! from her perspective!!!!! they focus way too much on this idea of her not being able to have gay dates with okabe i think!!!!!!! please, not more "BUUUUUUUT HE'S A DUDE XD" and I UNDERSTAND THIS IS NOT THE SHOWS MAIN GOAL. and they're just a bunch of dude bros trying to connect with the trans community but it could have been handled way better. people still think she's a femboy.

she is such a bad bitch.
there is no representation other than the fact she exists and every character other than that pink haired brat consistently respects her. her gender identity rarely comes up. and really, that's enough.
