Manga That Will Make You Cry
Manga
These are some sad and emotional manga that have moved me and was able to make me cry. Some of these manga might be completely bleak, some of them have an uplifting tone to them. Hopefully it can strike a chord with you as well.
I will mark the ones I personally highly loved and recommend if you want a good cry with a “🖤”.
(If you have any more recommendations, you can comment on my profile and I might give it a read and put it on this list)

🖤 A real autobiographical story about grief, forgiveness, and regret. Reading this will make you think of a certain someone in your life who was important to you and how you wish you could have been closer and kinder to them. It also tells about growing up and what it means to be an adult.

This manga tells what it feels like to grieve for someone close to you. Grief in its full raw power, not just being sad over their death, but also feeling angry that you couldn’t stop it, feeling happy thinking about all the fun times you had with them. It’s one of the most gut wrenching depiction of grief in manga that I’ve personally read and instead of feeling melodramatic, it feels more like punch after punch.
The story follows a woman who finds out her childhood friend had committed suicide and how she deals with the loss. This will strike you especially if you have lost someone to suicide (or just lost someone in general), and if you struggle with suicidal thoughts yourself.

🖤 This story is about learning how to connect with others and making amends with the mistakes you made in the past. Can some of the things you did truly be forgivable, especially when you’ve seen with your own two eyes how it affected the victim? Do you deserve the bad things that are coming to you now because of your past mistakes? How can you learn to be confident in yourself and connect with others once more when people have been against you in the past?
If you struggle with being bullied, social anxiety, or suicidal thoughts, this manga will be able to speak to you on a very personal level. But even if you don’t, it is very easy to sympathize with these characters.

The protagonist decides to accompany a girl in her class after finding out the secret that she has a terminal illness. This manga shows what it means to be grateful for life and to look forward to the small things around us. This will strike a chord with people who feel that they are wasting their lives and don’t really go out there into the world.

🖤 A journey of self acceptance, self love, finding the will to continue on, and living as your true self.
This story centers around a teen boy who is trying to come to terms with his sexuality and is a more realistic take on lgbt issues than most manga. This will especially make you cry if you have gone through the same experiences as the protagonist.

🖤 Though the premise is weird, this manga actually explores human relationships and what it means to connect to others. This will be relatable to those who find it hard to have human connections that are meaningful or if you’re someone who finds it hard to care about the people around you.

🖤 This focuses on the bond between a woman and a young boy she met at a park, whose dynamic slowly become like a mother and son. If you are someone who is going through a midlife crisis, has a soft spot for kids, or have a bad relationship with your mother, you will most likely be able to relate to the characters here. But even I, who don’t relate to any of those points, was able to easily cry to this manga because of the beautiful mother/son relationship between the two.

This story is about regrets and what it means to be alive. This is best relatable for people who think they live an average life with no real purpose towards their actions, not thinking that the future will not hold anything interesting for them.
The manga tells a man who sells his life for money, leaving him with only three months alive. He learns the value of living through his last moments with another woman tasked to watch him.

🖤 A tragic story about a teen girl prostituting herself because she cannot find happiness in herself. One of the saddest manga I’ve read, and there are also three spin offs with other characters that are just as sad so I recommend them all.

🖤 Even though the synopsis sounds like a generic hs drama, it is nothing but the opposite. This manga explores human emotions in ways more complex than any other manga in its genre. You will be able to find yourself in at least one of these character’s struggles, but also be able to sympathize with every other character even if they are the opposite of you.

🖤 This story is about a boy growing up with unfortunate circumstances around him and slowly succumbing to his bad mental health. The reason this manga is so sad is because of how realistic the atmosphere and characters are. This makes you think of your own life: your past, your current self, your future self. It is also because everyone can relate to the feeling of losing your childhood innocence and naïvety, wishing you could go back to simpler times.

🖤 A manga focusing on three protagonists that have their own struggles relating to disabilities. One caused a girl to be paralyzed by his own recklessness and had to find a way to live with the guilt and responsibility of this. One is a passionate at sprinting but must find a way to live through doing wheelchair basketball instead due to his disability. And the last one is a basketball captain who just recently got into an accident and is navigating his new life with his new body and the realization that his friends do not care for him.
What I love about this manga is that you’ll find a story that relates to you no matter what. The way the manga handles the story is so realistic and you’ll find yourself crying for everyone. I highly recommend it for everyone but specifically if you are disabled/know a loved one with a disability, if you’re filled with guilt, feel that you’re friends are fake, have a bad family situation (divorced parents), an outcast, had your dreams/passion robbed from you, or if you’re in the process of trying to be a better person.
