Read this a while ago because I thought the main character was incredibly cute, but I was really disappointed with what it was about. Adding a spoiler warning because I read this a few years ago and can’t remember if some stuff is revealed from the get-go or if it’s considered a spoiler.

In short, I found this to be an uninspired school battle royale with some pretty sub-par romance. I didn’t mind the romance part, but at least where I read up to, it was the part put on a side burner. If you’ve read/watched an anime about an all-out fighting school competition with high stakes, you’ll recognize the plot beats. This part might be a bit of a nitpick, but in addition to not liking the age gap between the two characters (one is in high school and the other has graduated college), I didn’t like how any of the characters worked with each other. With the pacing of the story, I didn’t connect with any of them and I honestly can’t remember any side characters or antagonists in detail. The main duo is fine (suicidal girl learning to enjoy life and a bunny man learning to care for someone), but this kind of plot, in my opinion, doesn’t work nearly as well if the rest of the characters are dull, as I don’t really care what happens to them in this death game.

It’s a shame, though, because I’m generally really weak for a cute monster/human romance, but I found this one to be very contrived and boring.

Honestly, it's not that bad. It's nothing amazing, but Monstaboo scratches an itch for cute human-monster relationships for me; however, I'm mixed on the fact that it drops multiple interesting plot points further on in the story.

Pros: The characters are usually interesting and fun to read about, the combat is decently choreographed (no JJK), and the subplot of loss is well done. I also love the villains and monsters in it, especially the main villain has that aura to him.

Cons: Too many ideas for the pot; the author brings up cool ideas just to either drop it or bring it in too late to really have lasting effects on the main story of Monstaboo. As well as the big "arcs" are usually more boring/contrived, but there are more interesting parts in it as well.

In conclusion, it's honestly a fun series I'd never recommend, but I'd bring it up in a conversation probably.
