Evangelion Movie 1: Jo

In a post-apocalyptic world, the last remaining human settlement in Japan is the heavily fortified city of Tokyo-3. Fourteen-year-old Shinji Ikari is brought to the headquarters of NERV, an underground organization lead by his estranged father, Gendou. He requests that Shinji become a pilot of an "Evangelion," a colossal android built to fight against monstrous and destructive alien creatures known as "Angels" that wreak havoc on the planet and threaten the survival of the remaining human race.

Although initially reluctant, Shinji is swayed by the idea of reconciling with his father, and agrees to aid in mankind's perilous endeavor against its alien threat, as the pilot of Evangelion Unit-01. Thrust into the midst of a dangerous battlefield, Shinji must find the necessary courage and resolve to face against the Angels' incursions before it is too late.

Although it greatly limits the melancholic contemplation of the anime, is dependant a lot on the preceding material (although I would recommend watching it only after the series and former films), and sidelines a significant portion of the cast needed to strengthen Shinji as a character, it works well as a retelling that, while seeking to piece together plot fragments of the series – this time without the brutal exposition of "End of Evangelion" and with a more potent, albeit brief, reinterpretation than the "Death(True)²" recap – satisfactorily blends 2D animation and CGI into an exciting epic that, I imagine, will give way to ... greater experimentation and unprecedented occurrences in subsequent films, given the occasional nudges to the attentive viewer in this movie.

Por mais que delimite muito a contemplação melancólica do anime, se debruce quase totalmente sobre o material antecedente e deixe de escanteio uma fração do elenco significativa para o fortalecimento do Shinji como personagem, funciona bem como um retelling que, ao mesmo tempo que busca juntar retalhos da série - dessa vez sem a brutalidade expositiva de End of Evangelion e com uma resignificação mais potente que Death(True)², mesmo que minuta -, mescla satisfatoriamente animação 2D e CGI num empolgante épico que, imagino eu, dará lugar a maiores experimentações e ocorrências inéditas nos subsequentes filmes, tendo em vista as pontuais cutucadas ao espectador atento.

Mixed Feelings

Evangelion But Too Shiny

Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone Is a shot for shot remake for the most part, that really makes me appreciate the original TV show much more.

It is no joke, the first half of the movie is a shot for shot remake, and it's not even better looking or better colored.The colour contrast is just not there, I really like the dark colors in the original TV show but, this is just too bright.

The Story pacing is all screwed up. it's hard to care, because many of the plot points are switched and happening so fast, they don't have the same ... meaning or emotions.

To say it shortly the first hour and 10 minutes are incredibly boring, but then things begin to change and I finally woke up.

The TV Show had time to breathe and really have a nice tempo to it. the movie just wants to go to the new stuff, which I can understand but seeing a worst version of what i love is just sad.

As far as shot-for-shot retellings of the first six episodes of Neon Genesis Evangelion go, Rebuild 1.0 is good. The updates to animation look nice, the few lines of dialogue/scenes added to the story are fine, the pacing is well done, and everything comes together in a way to make a fine, singular movie. Rebuild also does some great stuff! Ramiel looks amazing, the finale comes together to do justice to one of the best scenes in EVA as a franchise(Is any retelling of EVA complete without Rei's smile?), and the fact they made it come together to be its own movie is admirable.

But ... there is very little reason to watch Rebuild 1.0 if you already own NGE. Not even if you want to watch the second Rebuild, you can just watch up until the end of Rei II from the original series, slot in Rebuild 2.0, and congratulate yourself for saving the money you'd normally spend on this movie. But if you can watch Rebuild 1.0 for free or as part of a subscription or really in any way that's not putting your hard-earned money up for this product specifically, there's no harm in watching.
