Dandadan

Reeling from her recent breakup, Momo Ayase, a popular high schooler, shows kindness to her socially awkward schoolmate, Ken Takakura, by standing up to his bullies. Takakura misunderstands her intentions, believing he has made a new friend who shares his obsession with aliens and UFOs. However, Momo's own eccentric occult beliefs lie in the supernatural realm; she thinks aliens do not exist. A rivalry quickly brews as each becomes determined to prove the other wrong.

Despite their initial clash over their opposing beliefs, Momo and Takakura form an unexpected but intimate friendship, a bond forged in a series of supernatural battles and bizarre encounters with urban legends and paranormal entities. As both develop unique superhuman abilities, they learn to supplement each other's weaknesses, leading them to wonder if their newfound partnership may be about more than just survival.

Unbeatable. Makes everyone else look worse by comparison. Has the vibrant colors and emotive faces of an emotional drama, the goofy expressions and fast-paced dialogue of the best slice-of-life`s, and the balanced combination of monster-of-the-week and main plot progression of a great shonen.

Don't be mistaken though: Dandadan is a ROMANCE. That's its most powerful feature, and rightly so: the chemistry of the main duo is delightful, while still being full of teenage awkwardness in a way that's funny without being tiresome.

Everything about this show has been properly seasoned - the OP track is catchy and compatible with the show vibes, the monster design is iconic ... (and can be very effectively scary on occasion), character dynamics aren't allowed to grow stale - when Dandadan wants to make you laugh, you'll laugh; When it want to randomly flex its storytelling chops it'll manage to drive you to tears in less than 10 minutes off of a completely separate story.

Mixed Feelings

I don't get the hype around this show. Its kinda just like the average shounen series you would see come out every couple years that people freak out about and shoot to the top 100. This show is pretty much just majority action with some admittedly nice character and slice of life moments sprinkled throughout, but honestly I find myself really only enjoying it for the latter. Even then, there's nothing here that I couldn't get the same if not more from another show. Honestly, I cant really say too much bad about it, but I cant really say I loved too much of it ... either. If you're a fan of action, superpowers, and shows like JJK, its worth a watch, but if not then there's nothing really groundbreaking done in the narrative here.

Like watching the feverish dreams of a horny teenager.
Imagine asking the average highschool student, huge fan of supernatural action animes, to write a story appealing to their classmates.
This is the result.

A cool concept ruined by a terrible writing and recurrent mentions of sexual topics. One step away from being the typical H anime with more ero scenes than an actual story. Almost everything in DanDaDan is made in such a way that it eventually leads to either an action scene or a sexual pun. The typical arguments and misunderstandings between teenager characters.

Add a sad secondary backstory and call it a ... day.
Everything powered by weed.

The only reason why I'm not giving it even a lower rating is because it's yet another anime carried by a superior production quality.
The animation is technically perfect: beautiful lighting, choreographies and camera angles. And the music is always on point. Never distracting, but a great complement to what's happening on screen.

It's a shame because the premise of telling adventures about aliens and youkai/akuma was interesting.
Could have been like one of those ero works that despite the H topics, somehow manage to deliver a well written story, but this is only for teenagers who have nothing else in mind.
