Food Court de, Mata Ashita.

This is a really good anime for teen girls. I think they will love it. Most, if not all of the anime takes place in the food court or restaurant. And nothing much happens in the show other than two girls just talking to each other. And its all 'girl-talk'. And yet I enjoyed it because it was funny and the writing and acting was good. The conversation feels so natural and free flowing. You feel as though you are eavesdropping some real girls talking in a restaurant.

The OP is good too as a bonus. It has a dance and a good song.

If ... you are looking for a slice of life anime ... I recommend this.

“See You Tomorrow at the Food Court” is what happens when you write a modern Greek drama, just not so deep.

When I was but a wee lad studying psychology at the university I was forced by my master's thesis supervisor to do a rather simple experiment. I had to record pairs of people talking for 10 minutes about any subject. The experiment itself was simple but the analysis part was a ball buster. I had to count every damn joint move of every person during those 10 minutes. For fucks sake I was going mad doing this. Every finger movement, every head turn, every change ... of a sitting position.. FUUUU… sorry for the TMI. The goal was to see if people with good report and relationships synchronize when it comes to the amount of movement they make. Turns out that there is a correlation there. That said the more people are into a conversation the amount of movement they make increases in that experiment.
I’m talking about this because the first episode reminded me of those recordings and those two would definitely not be in the “good relationship or report” category. Surprisingly that changes the longer the show goes on (apart from some of the mini stories). It’s especially visible in the case of Yamamoto (I’ll get to her) as Wada is rather mobile and energetic the whole show.

Before we start I would like to explain something. I will be talking about “plot” and “story”. Many people use those terms interchangeably. I’m not one of those people, so to make sure everyone is on the same page…
I use the definitions for “plot” and “story” as Lisa Cron describes them:
“What happens in the story is the PLOT, the surface events.”
“STORY is about how the things that happen affect someone in pursuit of a difficult goal, and how that person changes internally as a result”.

Not gonna lie I got a strong Greek drama vibe from this show. Probably because it’s a rather good example of using (at least for the most part) unities of that form — the unity of action, place and time. And like most plays of this kind it uses dialogue at its main source of action… with varying degrees of success on that front. Every episode has 3 mini stories that 99% of the time use all of the unities. All episodes (I’m gonna use that term for the mini episodes as well, it will make the writing faster) take place mostly in the food court, concentrate on one specific topic and last just a few minutes of inworld time. So yeah. Greek drama. I’m not calling it a tragedy or comedy because there is nothing tragic here really and a comedy is a hit or miss. It missed with me. That said for what it is, it's actually a pretty solid slice of life. Unlike some slice of life shows this one doesn’t use other genres at all. I’m not saying it’s a bad thing but it could break the pattern of how the episodes go. Just saying.
Because it uses dialogue as its main form of communicating… actually almost everything, one might think that the dialogue is top notch. And here we encounter a problem. It’s not. Especially in the beginning the dialogues are pretty bad. They are flat with rather weird timing and the characters don’t really bounce off each other. I would go as far as to say that episode one could be used as an example of how not to write dialogue between friends. Even if those friends have different energy levels. For what it’s worth it gets better and by the end I would say that the dialogues (in the last 2 episodes) are pretty competent.
Now this is an important element for me. I love dialogues and how they are used. One of the best examples ever, on how to write magnificent, organic and dramatic dialogues comes from none other than “12 angry men” (I especially like the 1957 version with Henry Fonda and directed by Sidney Lumet). That movie shows how even the most mundane dialogue can be dramatic and important for the plot and story. This show is nowhere near that caliber and it shows. Most dialogues are Wada heavy with Yamamoto just giving reactions and sometimes some good points. It’s not bad per se but when You have just two characters You should give her more. Another example that You might be interested in, if You want to witness great dialogues is “Reservoir Dogs” from 1992, directed by Quentin Tarantino.

That all said, because of its format the show doesn’t really have a story or overarching plot. There are no long term consequences to anything. It actually resembles a sitcom in that regard. There is an unwritten rule in most sitcoms, that everything returns to status quo at the end of the episode and that’s exactly what happens here. For the type of show this is, it actually works but it does make it a bit flat and meaningless.

I actually like what the writers did with the main characters. Yamamoto looks like a gyaru but is actually the smart, responsible and more mature one of the duo. Wada on the outside could be taken for a proper student but, as she herself puts it, has a rotten personality, loves to talk about herself and (this is from me) is kind of a bitch with all her talking negative things behind peoples back. Wada actually got on my nerves more and more with each episode, I was hoping that maybe the writers will give her some sort of a redeeming episode where she will be positioned as someone who is able to not be an annoying cunt but unfortunately my hopes were in vain. Something that did surprise me is that Yamamoto was a far more interesting character than her energy level suggested. Her commentary on Wada's decisions, statements and calling her out on her bullshit, were sometimes almost funny and with each episode she becomes more and more warm and I could actually believe that she cares for Wada and not treat her like a pest that is just convenient to have.
All in all I don’t think this show is a travesty. It has its flaws, especially in the beginning but it gets better towards the end and I actually got invested in the duo — Yamamoto more than Wada (she’s really annoying). I actually understand why people would rate this show highly but I can’t do that. Too much wasted potential and bad dialogues for that.

See you tomorrow at the Food Court is an anime about an unlikely duo that hangs out at the KFC in some local food court place ( the whole thing might as well be a KFC ad ). What brings the duo together is them being outcasts in their own classes so now they meet up at this food court and mostly just talk about random stuff. The gyaru is a totally hot ( especially with the brown hair ) and sweet as can be but the other girl pretends to be your average Japanese school girl but is in reality quite a bitch with ... otaku tendencies. The topics at hand are sometimes quite random and the quality and laughs that might come with them arrange from relatable and funny to completely random and dull. All in all you could say this is just your average slice of life anime where you don't miss anything if you decide to pass on it. The most baffling of all is that the anime is only 6 episodes long and just ends without a proper conclusion. That ultimately just makes it a forgettable experience.

But I'll say once more, that gyaru is hot.
