@SakurasouBusters It comes from your virginity relatively to "Newtypes". Reading eps comments here and reviews in general, most people don't stand this basic element in the original Gundam universe despite how important it became at the end of 0079 and it being key to the story of the most acclaimed series (Zeta, 0079's sequel). Some even hate it. Taking that and the fact the episode isn't directly related to the "main" ones except for a tiny link and its epilogue into into consideration, it is not surprising. (btw, only a fourth of the watchers gave it a bad mark in this poll) Glad you liked it, strangely I couldn't lead myself to use this show as an introduction to its universe, maybe I should. ^^ I hope this infamous episode made you a bit interested in the Newtype thing and the series into the OYW enough (or maybe Unicorn will since it is the epilogue) to start the chronology. edit: I noticed you started Gundam 0079. xD (good luck with the TV version, some might find it indigestible compared to the cinema re-cuts) April 17, 2020 @Ten I only ever saw the "realism" argument given here. Isn't this primarily due to the relative "absence" of Newtypes and space sequences, and the outheast asian setting reminiscent of the Vietnam for the US imaginary ? I wonder if the japanese public saw it that way. (I find the realities of war better illustrated in 0079-0080 and for specific points in Victory and Zeta.

This felt like a filler or a sidestory more than an ending of the series, but as expected the real ending was the previous episode. That said this one had a very relaxing and mysterious feeling around it! I did loved that last scene though! Let's see what the specials and sidestory do have to offer but in general I did quite like the previous 11 intensely packed episodes!

I feel like the comments are by immature teens here. This was a touching heartfelt epilogue, a perfect conclusion to the series. Its purpose was to show what happened after the war ended for the characters. Its deeply philosophical. If you watched this entire show just to watch mechas fight in Jungle, you are a fool who missed the point of it all. In any case...To see the commander & Aina start a new life, the horror of the aftermath of war for kids who were probably misused to be child soldiers by Zeon, most of the crew still soldiers and sent around the universe like pawns, with only Michel discharged...It was a good conclusion. A dark conclusion which shows very precisely and without hiding intent, the damage that war does to people, specifically this Federation/Zeon war.

Was this episode necessary? Not. This i think. The eleventh episode was a perfect final, with uncertainty, but in this episode we can watch a close final, if a say the true, prefer opened finals, when you can imaginate the possibles ends.... In summary, the series was genial ....8/10.

I loved this series, mostly because of the romance between Shiro and Aina. Right from the 1st episode this kept me engaged and caring about the characters. The episode where they are stuck in the snow is one of my favorites because of how excited Shiro gets when he learns that Aina doesn't have a boyfriend, and then she kisses him. I am so glad it didn't end in some terrible Romeo and Juliette fashion. Was very happy to see them together one last time, and with Aina pregnant to boot ^^. One thing I love about all gundam series is that there are always likable characters on either end of any war. There are also some despicable ones, this is how life truly is. It is never so black and white as good vs evil. Well, on to the next gundam series!

I'm with the general consensus here that episode 12 is a completely pointless filler-fluff episode, however it's really nothing to get angry about, this happens all the time and it was probably just a little dvd extra that no one really cared about at the time. 11 is the true ending due to the END right before the credits and it even leaves the typical happy ending seeing how right at the end we see Shiro and Aina walking off. So, all in all, it was okay, and who really cares that it exists.

i thought the concept was pretty cool and unique and i enjoyed it overall but goddamn i wish a waited a week or so before seeing this, really messed with the impact of the original ending i wish they left it ambiguous in the end and maybe just shown just a smidgen of insight into their lives outside of and not connected to the war even if just in the credits montage

I remember throwing this series under the bus for the much more serious War in the Pocket, but I've gained a newfound respect for it after a recent rewatch. The romance between Shino and Aina was cringy at some points, but their chemistry is still better than most anime couples today. Most of all, the visuals are excellent by even today's standards. Now I consider this the second best Gundam OVA, although that might change once I finally watch Unicorn and Origins.

I cant believe Shiro and Aina got their happy ending. Michel should go out with Kiki already. Overall i think War In the Pocket was better story wise although 08 MS Team has better action. The romance of Shiro and Aina was rushed. Well Aina is pretty and maybe it was love at first sight for Shiro. Aina liked him back because of his kindness? I think Yuri Kellarny would be more interesting villain than Ginias. Ginias was just some crazy dude. Too bad the other members of 08 MS Team didn't appear in the last ep. I really liked how they all respected their commander Shiro. Time to watch Stardust Memory.

OK episode, but not really necessary. As already mentioned in ep.11 thread, I would've preferred a spotlight episode for Karen, who was the only member of the team not getting one. The entire episode runtime could've been used better than for an average epilogue, and the entire series could've been structured better to fill that extra episode in instead of making a long epilogue. Well, at least I got to see Kiki again. Though the whole thing felt a bit over-the-top, a former guerilla and a soldier got captured by underage kids with no weapons? Now that's realistic. Both could've escaped before even going to the "commander". Maybe they just didn't wanna though. Fighting over names...eh. I get that the kids are kinda traumathized but their trauma didn't feel realistic to me. Also funny how Kiki and Michel discovered Shiro and Aina so easily, like, they just sumbled upon them while searching through the forest and that's all. Easy find. Sigh, I don't know, this OVA was good, but it definitely didn't feel like "the best" Gundam out there, or even one of. There was quite a lot that could've been improved. We didn't even need that bit of info on Zeon NTs because we already had Lala being trained literally in the same place ("Flanagan Institute" was mentioned in the original). So the purpose for these kids to be shown almost disappeares altogether. The only thing justifying their inclusion in the story that remains is their connection to Shiro and Aina, showing the latter as "teachers" of sort, serving as a symbolic epilogue for both. But again, could've been better. If we're talking about great Gundam side stories, War in the Pocket definitely did more for me. This one is 7/10 I guess. P.S. Wat The 08th MS Team Novelization differs in several ways from the OVA, with the darkest and most drastic change involving Kiki. She is captured and gang raped by Federation soldiers, and in the middle of the horrific ordeal, commits suicide by biting her tongue. The event inevitably creates disgust and far more distrust towards the Federation by the guerillas. My poor girl

I actually liked that this episode was focused on Kiki and Michel, it gives their story at least some conclusion. But I would have preferred not to see Shiro and Aina at the end, their "new life" should have stayed vague and unclear. I already disliked how the previous episode ended, but now they took a slightly bittersweet happy ending and poured more sweetness all over it. I don't mind that they are happy and all, but for the series proclaimed as realistic, I probably expected more tragedy. And while the whole romance thing was interesting at first it turned out to be pretty much silly with little substance. Other characters of the team seem pretty random at this point with almost no significance to the story overall. Hence, this episode wasn't that bad in my opinion, it at least ties up some loose ends for them. Symbolism with the names was also a nice touch. I'm not sure where exactly the whole show went wrong, I really liked it at first and it had the potential to be great. It has a pair of characters who are determined to stop the war for the sake of love, mad brother as a villain, good setting and diverse cast of supporting characters. But with each episode, it felt like almost nothing happened. There were highlights, sure, but almost no deeper development, they just decided to do this and that as if rehearsed plot points, even their love doesn't appear natural but is just there because it makes the story "more interesting". As well as brother's obsession with Apsaras seemed to come from the need to create conflict rather than from any reasonable motivation a realistic antagonist should have. Well, maybe I just expected too much. It had some great ideas but the execution made them look more superficial than realistic as the show is acclaimed for. Not that it had to be realistic to be good, but it still doesn't help the overall impression. Rei_III said: @Ten I only ever saw the "realism" argument given here. Looking at it like this, the setting is indeed more realistic. But maybe the show itself wasn't intended to be this way in the first place. After watching Miller's report it's clear to me that the main characters are very idealistic and the main theme was to push this idea forward, how they don't have to fight if it goes against their beliefs, but I guess in real life in real war this would have ended tragically and they most likely wouldn't even survive past the first couple of episodes. It's probably not a depiction of war realities after all, but simply a love story in a war setting. Too bad that the development in this department wasn't as interesting too. If only the characters themselves were more likable and their love for each other wasn't so sudden on the verge of unbelievable.

Not sure why people are so upset with this last episode in the discussion I found it to be pretty neat. Overall I had a really good time with MS Team but it could have been a top 3 Gundam story for me if it wasn't for the lame romance subplot. Still pretty great though.

Despite not seeing either show in around 15 years, I started to have flashbacks of a certain other Gundam OVA set around the same time. I watched this show to remind myself that the UC can have happy endings. Still one of my favorite shows even if I completely forgot what the plot was about. The last episode was definitely interesting. Both Kiki and Mikel acted a bit more nurturing or cowardly respectively when compared to the rest of the series. Now I have no memories of this episode at all, maybe the DVD I used to own did not include it? It is always nice when the girl who pilots the super weapon doesn't die, it is a bit of a Gundam cliche at this point. Not as big of a cliche as the "stranded with an enemy" episode which this series had two of. I am fine with that though because those episodes were super cute.

overall this series is a 6/10 to me good art, animation, and action sequences, but mediocre characters, forced and rushed romance, forced melodrama(michel and eledore episodes especially), and a very one dimensional antagonist. Pretty much everyone in that 08 crew is incompetent minus Karen.

All the parts with Michel and Kiki were weird. I have no idea why the little Zeon kids got shoved in at the end of ep. 11 and in this one. It wasn't awful but the kids weren't developed at all and just seem really strange. I guess it makes sense since they were orphans/living on their own for a lot of their lives, but that seemed to be very poorly explained. It just seemed kinda nonsensical, especially that name part. If it weren't for Michel and Kiki having good chemistry then it would have been unbearable. Not sure how I feel about Aina and Shiro surviving either. I think it would have been a lot more impactful and touching if they died for what they believed in. Ah well. At least we got some pretty scenery scenes near the end of the episode, reminded me a lot of scenes like the butterfly one in MSG. Wasn't a great series but it was a fun watch. Shame it seemed pretty rushed overall.

Not a popular opinion, but this episode is my favorite from the series. It tells a really heartfelt story in a stand alone and contained episode. I know a lot of people find the end cheesy, but I do find the last shots reassuring unlike the end of episode 11. I originally had the series slated around an 8, but this last send off raised it to a 9 or so. This whole show has one of the best 90s dubs I've ever seen, and to go from the octane in the previous episodes to this melancholy and relaxed pace reminded me of the changes in tones from movies like Apocalypse Now. I love this episode, 10/10.

Wait, Les Claypool (bass-player from 90s band Primus) did the soundtrack to this, too? Thats bizarre; AFAIK Claypool only ever worked on two animes- This one, and "Macross II- Lovers Again"- Guess he must be a mecha fan, but couldn't pick a side, between the two giant real-robot franchises?

Was nice seeing Kiki again and getting a happy end for Shiro and Aina after the sudden end of the last episode. Certainly makes this show even more weird though. Only thing weirder is how this has a rating above 8 when everyone here seems to hate it. I liked it, both the show and this episode. But it felt like 2 completely different shows glued together. One half with a rather lighthearted take which focuses on more characters and one more abstract, philosophical, focusing on the romance of 2 characters. Kind of like the cut in Full Metal Jacket (Michel sort of reminds me of Joker or whatever he was called) Regarding what was mentioned about Kiki in the novel ending, UC Gundam so far is weird. It has lots of grim elememts but never really mentions them much. This show had a flashback of Shiro witnessing a gas attack on a space colony, but thats really just a short scene. So novel Kiki would fit the grim part but not the light hearted half of this show. Maybe it got influenced by shows of its time like cowboy bepop and trigun? With the mix of completely different elements. Its just really weird. Gas attack on a colony, people dying all over, shooting down med evac ships, war, but also some nearly cartoonish happy end and lots of light banter. I think this had potential but simply needed more episdes to be executed well. A lot of times later on I thought I missed an episode with sudden changes between episodes like Shiro beeing jailed and suddenly let go the next. 7/10

Hopefully those Zeon kids won't be soldiers, and will live a peaceful life. Michel and Kiki finally located Shiro and Aina, and it appears that Aina is pregnant. Of course, they'd both be court martialled if they went back, so it appears that they're living off the grid in solitude. This was a really good anime. All the good guys survived, and they were all likeable in their own way.

This ending was okay. Felt more like filler but it's not all bad. I liked Michel's and Kiki's chemistry. Nice to see them as good friends. I felt as if they could of done more with this episode. Maybe show Shiro and Aina caring for and teaching these kids things, get them on their feet, but we didn't get that unfortunately. What we're these kids in the lab for? Why were they being experimented on? How did Michel and Kiki find the exact location of where Aina and Shiro were in nothing but trees? Some things just aren't really explained. I don't hate it, but it's not great either. To me, episode 11 is the ending, cause we knew Aina and Shiro survived. If this episode wasn't so filler feeling, and the romance wasn't so rushed, I'd give it a 9. But 8/10 it is! Great.

It was an alright epilogue. The kids felt kind of random at first but they were worked into the larger story. Still not sure why Kiki and Michel were searching for Shiro and Aina. Is it because they both had nowhere to return to after the war? That's sad. Good to know Shiro and Aina made it and got the happy ending they wanted. And that Shiro is successfully avoiding court martial for desertion. But it still seems irresponsible of them to just leave those kids alone.

I also truly, HONESTLY, believe that first page commentors and most of you are teenagers without any experience in life if you don't think this is one of the best Gundam shows ever created. I honestly believe it. Don't care how many anime or robot mecha shows you have watched, this is truly a real soldier point of view show which is obviously backsided because of the love adventure of the main protagonist, and just maybe, because you like Zeon over the feddies. During my rewatch of this amazing show, I just wanted to praise Chihiro Yonekura and her amazing voice in her songs. I could've gone to her concert but I missed out. Also, to my favorite squadron of soldiers: Sanders, Michel, Eleodore, Karen and Shiro. Best fucking squadron ever. People don't know jack shit if you think there wasn't even a bit of character development during 11 episodes. Real soldiers, real combat mobile suit to mobile suit, what else can you ask? Shiro isn't the perfect MC but at least he's honest and to me, a very outstanding newtype. 8/10

I have a rather mixed opinion on this series. There were parts I enjoyed and parts that were just fine for me. I liked the characters but the story felt a little fast or rather it feels like they jump from point to point especially towards the end compared to the more slow paced beginning, likely just to bring the character arcs to their conclusion. I don’t have any qualms about ending, in fact I liked this episode. 7/10, finally time for Thunderbolt. (Watching UC in chronological order)

Shiro was missing in action, but his teammates never stopped believing. These kids were victims of Flanagan from 0079 (no surprise his flashback uses Yasuhiko's redesign of him for the movie trilogy). They had their names taken away from them in the inhumane Zeon experiments. After the Komusai crashed they also abandoned the dog tags. Shiro and Aina gave them the new names based on their own and the members of the 08th MS Team which is why they are overprotective about their names being taken away, because it had been done before.

this ova series fails to engage with almost anything that makes a gundam anime worth watching. it might as well not even be a gundam story. there's some great animation cuts especially in the desert episode and the music is good but that's really all it's got going for it. the characters are boring or annoying, the story is completely inept at conveying how or why anything is happening, events just transpire and characters bluntly react. it feels like this anime was written by a teenage boy with no imagination. this last episode makes this worse by taking the almost interesting nebulous ending of not knowing what happens to aina and shiro and then just futzes around for half an hour before revealing they were alive the whole time. who even cares. i kept seeing the edges of an interesting story in moments throughout this whole anime but none of it ever amounts to anything. it's just disappointing

I hated this show so much i bum rushed it after episode 7. The first half was boring and bland, the second half was god awful. As a show that never once engaged me, was boring the whole way through and had no interesting or likeable characters, it automatically goes down to 5/10 at best. -1 for having a terrible, unbelievable, forced and horribly executed romance. Another -1 for that horrible romance being a major focus and the lynchpin of half the show. And lastly -1 for not even having a satisfying ending. In fact i hated this so much that i will skip the sequel movie, and also Gundam Igloo as that was described to me as basically just weapons testing short films. Since im not that into action (I like it, but only if i am invested in the characters or plot) it seems like the exact opposite of my thing. So onwards to Thunderbolt, i guess. It cant be worse than this tripe. Still a better love story than Mirai and Sleggar.

Kind of a trippy ending. Why would Shiro and Aina just leave the kids there and not just have a cottage with them? Cool to tie in Dr. Flanagan and all that wackiness although it's sad. Did Michel and Kiki just keep walking and randomly find Aina and Shiro? Oh well, all in all really enjoyable show.
