Couple questions (I've seen through episode 6)

Why doesn't Kaiji go to the police and why doesn't he just pay it off in the 11 years instead of gambling? Didn't the yakuza guy give him an amount he was actually able to pay for each month? Isn't that better than gambling and possibly getting sent to a concentration camp? (or whatever they are sent to)

Look at his lifestyle, does he seem like the type of person to work diligently? Even if he does work does he look like he can get a decent paying job? He has absolutely no talent aside from gambling.

And he has no money to pay for an lawyer so is there any point going to the police?
