I've wanted to watch this anime for the longest time because I enjoy some of the songs from Yuki Kajiura. They are so nice, she's really awesome at creating music....
but the low score: is it justified? Is this anime really that bad or is just not everyone able to appreciate it properly?
I asked ChatGPT (xD) and it told me that if focuses heavily on philosophical themes that may go beyond what people are used to, also the anime has a slow pace..

It's exactly that. It's mostly talk, at least I want to call the first season is. Mostly about if
There's different seasons of .Hack, but everyone of them have different characters.

For me, the pacing was a big part of it. I watched the english dub and found the performances lacking as well - subbed might be an improvement. There’s decent .hack content out there, for me this ain’t it.

people who are rating it this low have an extremely smol attention span as it is a deep and while not the greatest anime ever it's dang good for itself and underappreciated. also probably becuz some people act like it's a lesser than rip off of Sao even though the dot hack franchise that hack sign is apart of but spoilers u don't have to watch it all to enjoy this as each story separate and doesn't really connected on anything. my point n general I believe it's freshly minted newbs to anime with recentcy bias....

The music is fantastic, but the actual anime is middle of the road and confusing for those who never played the early games.

.hack//SIGN - 2002
SAO, LN - 2009, Anime 2012

who on earth thinks .hack is a rip off of SAO??? ... also they have almost nothing in common besides "stuck in a VRMMO", and "Yuki Kajiura did the OST", and "portrays gamers well"

The music is certainly incredible. One of the best scores/soundtracks Yuki Kajiura ever wrote. Anyway, I loved it in 2003(?) when I first saw it, and in 2024 when I rewatched it. I've always been really confused by the low score here

Definitely.

It's light on action and focuses more on exploring themes of escapism, roleplaying, etc.

I'd say that the series is heavily affected by the early 00s view of the web and how it'd evolve. Cyberspace being its own frontier or stuff like forum rumors/internet urban legends. That sense of mystery appeals to me, but might not translate well to newer audiences. And it lacks the broad appeal of more action-centric anime.

Isn't it interesting to see how people approached mmo and online gaming in the earlier days?
