Hello, everyone!

Well I don't have seizures, but i'm very UNCONFORTABLE (migraine for days) with intense flashing light scenes such as the "Pokemon episode 38" to the point that I even covered my eyes in a specific scene in Deadpool 3 film.

So, could someone help me with that? Does Gunbuster have too many flashing light scenes like those or just one or two skippable?
Should I be cautious or can I feel totally safe?

Thanks in advance!

Don't count on me remembering but there are a lot of space action scenes with explosions and flying missiles. Especially the last episode which had section in black and white if I can remember. Don't think there are full flashes for long beriods but there are scenes with flickering.

It's not full-screen strobing like in Pokémon, but the battle at the climax has a lot of quickly-scrolling colorful backgrounds and lightning flashes that could potentially be overstimulating on a large screen. It's a sequence that lasts about 4 minutes.

Ah, I sure do miss those strobe scenes. Not particularly ones done to the same effect as Cyber Solider Porygon, but stuff like big hits having black and white flashes, freak accident scenes having red and white, etc. Truly an art form lost to the retro era of anime. Even the way Pokemon used to do it in the first 37 episodes was pretty fun to watch. OLM definitely would've rode that horse home and made it their trademark if they didn't screw up so bad in 1997.

Thing is with Gunbuster, this is Gainax we're talking about here. If OLM didn't do it, Gainax was eventually going to be the big incident with how much they loved using those effects. Even when anime entered the new TV guidelines, Gainax jumped to films and OVAs instead to get around the rules. Heck, Anno straight up became exclusive to those two forms of the medium as well following the changes. But I digress.

Just remember that anime often dim the lights nowadays to mitigate intensive animation, especially because the action side naturally refuses to remove quick action pans shots due to their significance in conveying, well, action. Nobody is going to make a project that removes them and it would be an insane amount of work.

I'm morally against it too as I heavily disdain the work of artists being modified in that kind of capacity, minus obvious extremities. Gunbuster is going to be visually punchy in nearly every action sequence, especially the last episode. Because, as noted earlier, Gainax loved these effects until they couldn't use them anymore. So watch it with that risk in mind.

But if it's a difficult thing for you to experience, I personally don't mind rewatching the entire thing again at a much faster pace and letting you know which parts contain flashes with timestamps. The experience itself with Gunbuster is worth a watch at least once.

Sorry for the late reply

Thanks a lot for the detailed answers!

Well, I'd be really grateful, but don't feel pushed to do so as I'm sure it would take too much time. The way you and Kanudelgruber described it already helped me a lot on making the decision... I'll postpone watching it

Just watched it recently but the 5th episode does contain flashing lights that were pretty intense but it’s brief, it doesn’t last too long. The final episode I would say is a little bit less intense, bit risky but those scenes don’t last too long from what I can remember.
