If you didn’t know, Fullmetal Alchemist originally aired in 2003 while the manga was still ongoing, which forced the anime to branch off into an original storyline. Only 6 years later, once the manga was nearly complete, the series got a full reboot with FMA Brotherhood, which was a more faithful adaption of the manga. This was mainly possible because of how successful and popular the original anime was.

So my question is: Why didn't Tokyo Ghoul get the same treatment?

- Tokyo Ghoul √A is basically an alternate/anime-original route, not a manga adaptation.
- Tokyo Ghoul:re then tries to adapt 181 chapters in just 24 episodes which we all know how that turned out.

With how massive Tokyo Ghoul was at its peak, you’d think a full remake that faithfully adapts the original manga and :re would print money similar to what FMA Brotherhood did at the time.

What do you think stopped this from happening? So much wasted potential...

That's a question we'll probably never get answer to.
They literally made a DBD collaboration, but not an actual readaptation.

Animes are mostly advertisement for merchandise, games, novels, and mangas because that's where the big money comes from.

Tokyo Ghoul is pretty much dead in that regard, the manga has been finished for ages, and there's nothing left to actively promote. A reboot would be risky and extremely expensive, requiring the production of multiple seasons. As an investor, I wouldn't bet on Tokyo Ghoul, there are more interesting projects out there. Comparing FMA and Tokyo Ghoul is... FMA wasn't finished yet when they decided to produce FMAB + FMA was super popular back then, it was the shit, so an adaptation was super lucrative and not risky.

Some adaptations and reboots are really weird (fucking psyren is getting an anime), everything is possible, but honestly, I don't think we'll get sonething from Tokyo Ghoul again. I don't see it happening.

@-DxP- I wasn’t necessarily talking about Tokyo Ghoul right now, I meant in general, especially when it was at its peak.

Also, yea anime are often advertisements, but that same logic also applied to FMA. When FMAB was greenlit, the manga was already in its final stretch. It wasn’t a new IP with years of content left. The original 2003 had already “done its job” as an advertisement, but they still committed to a 64 episode full reboot, which is exactly the kind of expensive and risky move that you’re saying investors wouldn’t take.

the author has previously stated that a bad adaptation is good because more people will check the original that way. https://holycow99.tumblr.com/post/675005428687618048/%E7%9F%B3%E7%94%B0%E3%81%8A%E5%AF%BF%E5%8F%B8-211121-translation-part-8

TBF, there may be several reasons, one of which is that FMAB was a rare exception. Also, because of how poor the TG adaptation was, the hype had already ended, and the source material had also concluded in the same year RE finished, leaving no upcoming manga volumes to boost sales.

Most remakes never perform as well as the originals. Fmab was one of the few exceptions, and it happened at a time where studios and producers were willing to gamble on long-running adaptations. Tokyo Ghoul aired in a different era for anime. Its seasonal schedule kind of made the whole remake debate pointless.

it's such a shame though that one of the absolutely best mangas doesn't get an adaptation that does it justice, i'm also fairly certain that TG's fanbase is still active and have yet to completely abandon the show so i bet that if a remake ever gets announced it would probably be successful as long as it gets a treatment similar to Frieren or TYBW in terms of pacing and animation
