Tell me what do you guys think about the narration. I personally think it shouldn't be there. It's not a book , it's a visual media , they should just let us figure things out by whats happening on the screen instead of the constant info dump , sometimes it's fine but I don't like it during the fight scenes .

The narration only comes in every once in a while. I think it's better than forced expository dialogue or monologues that completely ruin the pacing.

because the manga has a lot of explanation (one of the things that killed jjk)

Hmm... haven't watched JJK S2 in the longest time but I remember that some of them were tellings of how certain rules work with the techniques. You can't really get around that. I remember S1 doesn't have a narrator while the manga had one. It's saying much when they had to include one for S2

They do it because of the insane power system. So they put it in the story so it doesnt feel random and weird when its time to explain a power of a character. Trust me when the culling games get here youre gonna be glad they explain some of the powers. You need it or else nothing will make sense. I agree with the show dont tell concept, but some of the up coming powers HAVE to have explanations and how they effect things.

I think there’s a reason to justify this: if I remember correctly, when a sorcerer (or anyone really) explains their technique, its power automatically grows, hence justifying why they explain their moves.

Still, yes it’s very ass, but this happens when you have a not so complex power system but that varies from user to user so it’s hard to keep up with everyone without explaining them…

You can do it well and you can do it badly. In many cases you cannot avoid it completely, because you need the audience to understand what your characters are capable of.
JJK is a great example of badly narrating stuff. In many cases they narrated irrelevant things or the explanation came from untrustworthy sources, so we could make sure that what the narrator said was true.

What do you think of the narrator in Hunter x Hunter?
Imagine normies saying: "Peaky Blinders is mid and overhyped. Just another typical crime drama show. Breaking Bad is much better.". Or: "Without action choreography no one would've cared about John Wick. Kingsman, on the other hand, is not like other action franchises!".

its not constant, barely we get that narration and when we do its done super well and just makes the overall scene better, the power system of JJK has so many tricks and stuff you can do that if the narrator doesnt say anything no one will guess.

I would say it's due to the fact that unfortunately the author is not the best at showing stuff through the characters, but many people won't agree with me...

In my opinion it's rather plainly visible that while the world is complex, Gege has a problem with rooting their characters in it, if I can put it like that. They don't explore the actual world enough for us to be able to learn how everything works, so it unfortunately turns into galore of "tell, not show", instead of the opposite. We get info dumped and that's it. The information barely has any roots in the world we get to see.
I'm not sure if my explanation of how I see it will make much sense to anyone else, but yeah, that's what ultimately soured my view on the series, because I used to love it a lot through the first and second season. Then I read the rest in the manga and ended up severely disappointed. 💔

I like it, and even more so the detail that the narrator is the voice actor for Tengen, the character who sees everything. It gives it such an alluring, mysterious vibe.

It's like saying poems should not rhyme because they should be told by words.
Writing great dialogue and info dumping is important for the reader, if it is written engagingly. Which gege does and the translation does too.

The dialogue in Jjk is so bad the author resorted to narration for most of the exposition. It smh makes the show a lot more bearable. A lot of other series do the same since most shonen authors are terribly inept at writing proper dialogue.

Because JJK breaks it's own rules all the time, so Gege has to frequently bullshit some explanation.

at least its just a voice over in anime so its acceptable, in the manga its huge boxes of text in between every panel ruining the flow of the fights.

There was always narration in the manga. Season 1 tweaked the wording so they were character monologues instead.

it's better when they use a narrator instead of the characters explaining their powers to each other while fighting...

Japanese animation with its limited resources couldn't exist if most cuts weren't about people standing still and talking (yes, including action anime).

The only issue I have with Jujutsu Kaisen is the time wasted explaining the unnecessarily convoluted power system (trying too hard to be the next Hunter x Hunter and failing at it) when its real strength lies in being a dumb fun and edgy battle shounen.

Love it... makes the exposition feel way less awkward and stupid! Takes away the need to have characters explain how their secret technique works in the middle of a fight.

I mean characters do explain their techniques, but Gege does it well. Plus Nanami explained in season 1 that explaining your technique can make it stronger and you can also mislead your enemy by leaving out certain parts.

Yea I mean at the end of the day it's an anime and characters are gonna explain, but thankfully the narration limits it lol

Jjk has a very good yet complex power system. I think the narration is necessary, and you can't say it's bad, maybe just overused sometimes.

it's because this show power system is very difficult to understand just by watching the viewer need a naration carecters explain their powers for that reason only because we as a audiance won't understand the power system gage created.

To make JJK look better than it really is lol

JJK always over-complicate itself to make the series seem smarter than it really is. A new character named Kirara that's coming up in the next season will have a fight exactly like this, simple power but over-complicated to the point where readers think it's a complex power that only the big brain could comprehend. The narration is just there to make it classier than your usual characters standing around and explain their powers for no reason.

What's funny is that the narration confuses me even more. Random in-universe jargon words that I'm supposed to just know or remember from the ONE time they were MAYBE mentioned in some previous arc? Dog shit writing.
