Synopsis

Engrossed in the family business of traditional doll making, Wakana Gojou is a reserved high school freshman without friends. Harboring painful memories of a childhood friend's disdain toward his interest, Gojou cannot relate to his classmates and their pastimes, eventually isolating himself.

Gojou has yet to perfect his crafting of dolls' faces, but is exceptionally skilled at making their clothes. His finesse with the sewing machine is soon discovered by his beautiful classmate Marin Kitagawa, whose boldness and honesty Gojou both admires and envies. Instantly, she shares with Gojou her own hobby: she likes to cosplay as characters from erotic video games.

However, Kitagawa cannot sew her own costumes, leading her to seek Gojou's expertise. Now, as he is dragged along to the charming girl's endless cosplay-related affairs, Kitagawa becomes his first friend who fully accepts him. Thus, although polar opposites, their relationship slowly blossoms through their aptitude in helping each other in the intricate world of cosplay.

This manga spends most of its run being far better than its current MAL rating would indicate. There are a lot of reviews that talk about the series as a whole, but I want to hone in on what I believe to be the primary cause for its average MAL rating dropping nearly 1 whole point at the end. I will do my best to not spoil things.

Mixed Feelings

Absolutely loved this manga and have re-read it multiple times. Dress Up Darling is visually stunning slice of life with a dash of romance and a great focus on the cosplay process and community. There is no overarching story or end goal for the characters in the manga. Not to say there is no development. Though the developlment you mainly see is the relationship between Marin and Gojou, and Gojou's development as an artist and overcoming his insecurity for having a "feminine" passion. This manga was too frustrating to read in my opinion, especially since I read it while the chapters were coming out. Every chapter took almost a month or sometimes more than a month to release, for each one to be disappointment after disappointment, it became really tiring really fast, but now that it's finished, the reading experience might be a bit better... still, there are many issues with Sono Bisque Doll.
