Synopsis

Denji has a simple dream—to live a happy and peaceful life, spending time with a girl he likes. This is a far cry from reality, however, as Denji is forced by the yakuza into killing devils in order to pay off his crushing debts. Using his pet devil Pochita as a weapon, he is ready to do anything for a bit of cash.

Unfortunately, he has outlived his usefulness and is murdered by a devil in contract with the yakuza. However, in an unexpected turn of events, Pochita merges with Denji's dead body and grants him the powers of a chainsaw devil. Now able to transform parts of his body into chainsaws, a revived Denji uses his new abilities to quickly and brutally dispatch his enemies. Catching the eye of the official devil hunters who arrive at the scene, he is offered work at the Public Safety Bureau as one of them. Now with the means to face even the toughest of enemies, Denji will stop at nothing to achieve his simple teenage dreams.

Background

Chainsaw Man ranked fourth and first in the 2020 and 2021 Kono Manga ga Sugoi! for the Male Readers division, respectively. The series was nominated for the 13th Manga Taisho Award in 2020. It won the 66th Shogakukan Manga Award in the Shounen category, along with Karakai Jouzu no Takagi-san.

As part of the JUMP START initiative, the first three chapters of Chainsaw Man were published in English in VIZ Media's digital Weekly Shounen Jump on the same day as the Japanese release. It has been published digitally as an English simulpub through MANGA Plus. The volumes have been published in English by VIZ Media under the Shonen Jump imprint since October 6, 2020. The manga has also been published in German by Egmont since October 6, 2020, and in Italian by Planet Manga since July 22, 2021.

The first part of the series ended with 97 chapters on December 14, 2020. Serialization of the second part began on Shounen Jump+ with the release of chapter 98 on July 13, 2022.

While many reviews have already been left for this b a n g e r of a manga, mine has the advantage of coming near the end of Part 2, and so I'll be taking that into account here (spoiler free, obviously). And unlike the top posts, I'll keep my analysis relatively brief so that potentially interested readers don't have to sift through a novel in order to figure out whether this manga is worth a try.

Like every manga Fujimoto has ever put out (and I would know, given that I've read his entire output as of writing this - except for Look Back, in ... which case I've seen the film), the storytelling is wholly unique, and for the most part, the absolute best part of Chainsaw Man. Fujimoto's ability to keep you on your toes is part insanity, part complex character work, and part off-the-wall plot twists that always seem to arrive just when you're at peak confusion and think the narrative is beginning to stall out. That said, Part One is significantly better at this than Part Two; Fujimoto's strengths are also his weaknesses, and unfortunately, as of late he's had a more difficult time coordinating these various elements.

The second undisputed strength of Chainsaw Man is, as just alluded to before, the characters. Even amidst the chaos, every single person feels like a real individual experiencing their own inner story alongside the core events of the manga. Their designs are striking (the sheer amount of parodies, fan art, and memes across the internet are surely evidence of this), and best of all, every single character you encounter is quite vulnerable - Fujimoto is an author not afraid to off someone, and this lends the story real weight and emotional stakes that far too many other manga lack.

But even more critical than that, Fujimoto also has the reader sit with the consequences of a character that is gone. So many stories feature someone dying, only that "someone" is a forgettable side character or a first chapter/episode fake-out tragedy that sets up the *real* story and protagonists. Not so in Chainsaw Man; Denji's character arc is fascinating not only because of how much he goes through, but also because of how much the reader gets to see him change and react to his circumstances (admittedly this is another criticism I have, as do many others, of Part Two: Denji is surprisingly sidelined, and the manga's action sequences slowly but surely begin to encroach on the stand-out dialogue and character development that carried so much of Part One).

This is already getting too long, so I should probably wrap it up: long story short, the best way I can describe Chainsaw Man is that it's an experience - it will make you laugh, cry, cringe, gasp, rage, roll your eyes, and more. Yet behind the shock value, the goofiness, and even the outright brilliant craftsmanship of the paneling (seriously, it's divine) is a multifaceted commentary on poverty, desire, morality, war, love, sacrifice, and even things like clandestine government abuses and geopolitics. If you can forgive some of its bumpier elements, Chainsaw Man is both a towering achievement in its own right and an anomaly of its medium, and both of those reasons should hopefully be enough to convince you to at least read Part One. Seriously, it's worth it!

TLDR: Chainsaw Man Part One is an unequivocal 10/10 for its dynamic, unpredictable storytelling paired with memorable and complex characters, and probably some of the best paneling you've ever seen. Part Two retains this momentum for a stretch, but slowly gets gummed up by its own weight and competing storylines - though the finale is still underway, and Fujimoto is known for being able to cut through his own complications when required. That said, the jittery pacing of Part Two and its relative lack of strong characters compared to Part One compels me to place the manga overall at an 8/10 (pending future developments).

Mixed Feelings

This is context of me reviewing after watching the CSM Reze Arc Movie. I want to say that I am reviewing this with knowledge from spoilers I was told from bits and pieces up to the ending of part one of the Public Safety Arc, and anime adaptation bias because source material and adaptation is completely different. However, this will be my honest opinion coming from the perspective as a first time reader.

I think the manga carries itself very well in a sense that it's main center of focus is the Main Character and how he carries himself through the journey from practically on the ... cusp of nothing, he was nothing, worth nothing, and was cared for as nothing. That his dreams are made to what he dreamt, even if it's seem as "trivial", "selfish", "Inappropriate" that's what makes stories interesting like this manga has, it's different from the typical stereotypical plots. I think it highlights very good details for him and the supporting cast through out each scene. The art style while simplistic at times and some panels not as visually appealing, it has a charm to it where when a scene needs to be visually beautiful or needs to evoke certain emotions I can. I personally felt my heart dropped at times and laughed at a couple panels, and felt genuine sadness.

My couples of my gripes I have with this manga after the first 100 chapters. Pacing is super fast, one arc and most people know this arc, in total it was around 13 chapters, which to me is very short, as a reader I felt disconnected and in terms disinterested with this arc and the main supporting character was to be put bluntly an after thought. I would honestly say if each arc could have some extra chapters to flesh out conversations, details, and even fight scenes, because most of the fights are unfortunately short. When you remove a character it needs to achieve something to an affect which I think it doesn't capture as perfectly as it should have because after this arc, the main character seemed to move on, and it does seem like a theme a bit because when you need to a character to grow it has to show some level of character growth and improvement, different habits, and thinking consciously. However, nearing the final acts there was tremendous growth I do admit, and then it was slid under the rug by moving onto the next thing, it doesn't take time to have extra chapters to flesh out emotions and the severity of consequences, choices, the people you trust, and removing of characters. I think it's still great for what it needs to be but it can be better with more fleshing out.

If you love funny moments, and very memorable characters. There's one hell of load of loveable, memorable, murderizeable, and hateable cast. Funny moments are great in this manga, haven't not laughed or chuckled/smiled when a chapter/page was suppose to be funny.

Nudity is in parts of this manga and does play with motivations. I think for the first parts I think its great it makes a characters realistic, but at times it can get a bit much. Especially with one of the arcs where we were introduced to 5 new characters and there was a particular panel drawn that was a bit unnecessary. It could've been better served or used to explain their abilities, names, or possibly motivations.

Art style is very unique, and Tatsuki Fujimoto is a very talented story teller and artist. I think at times the panels can be a little inconsistent and proportions are off and it's hard to tell what is going on during fighting panels. I think the art style has it's own unique charm where it quite literally looks like first iterations/last iterations of a sketch, you could see practice/scratch drawings and some line work is unrefined but in its own unique art style. However, when it needs to be serious it can be a really good panel. I have no issues wit the art style, especially facial expressions. Some of the facial expressions are done well and are funny at times when they are done poorly for the situation.

I do recommend this manga however having mixed feelings from my gripes but the good outweighs the bad by a good margin. I think this manga is very good for what it needs to be, but it can incredibly better by more details, conversations, and moments where there is slight pauses and a bit of filler, because I think having a couple of chapters of filler or chapters leading into a big arc is good or extend an arc by couple of more chapters than moving onto the next thing. I'll give it a 8 flat but as a first time reader be aware that the pacing is very quick, and your left with a lot of questions than answers, however you could assume and you'll have the general correct answer by deducing it to be a self explanatory answer.

These are my first initial thoughts 10 minutes after reading 100 chapters. I will edit this after fully completing the most recent chapter.

Chainsaw man is terrible. basically just gooner slop. Tha characters suck. Denji has no development, dosent learn from any of his experiences, just a loser gooner. Makima is a shit villain. Just causes confusion. There is nothing interesting about her character, and she was a predictable villain. The other characters besides aki, asa/yoru, angel, and maybe power, are trash and have no depth to their character, they are there to either die or to move the story along. The author obviously dosent know how to write or flesh out his characters. The worldbuilding is awful, Jujutsu Kaisen is better, Demon slayer, MHA, hell even Trash ...
