Synopsis

Suffering from a terminal illness, Yuuta Itou's mother asks him to film her last moments, which he does. From her radiant smile when she is with her family to the times when sickness ravages her body in the hospital, he records hours upon hours of footage. After her passing, Yuuta compiles her life into a movie to screen at his school, deciding to add a bit of fantasy to the ending of his film, Dead Explosion Mother, with a literal explosion!

Following the backlash caused by his supposedly tone-deaf portrayal of his mother's death, Yuuta trudges to the hospital roof to take his own life—but there, he meets a girl named Eri. Captivated by his film, Eri requests Yuuta to make a new one that will blow the previous out of the water and prove his critics wrong. The movie they set out to make will stand apart by blurring the line between fact and fiction. And of course, it would not be a Yuuta film if it did not have his personal flavor—just a dash of fantasy.

profound and subversive, in hindsight it should seem predictable but is far from it. it's also beautiful and yet incomprehensible. there's a bunch of things that happened that you think "are happening" only to have your perspective entirely destroyed with a different angle. extraordinarily unique. in so many instances it gives an elegant portrayal of life that makes me question, did i just interpret that or did it happen? how much of my mind made that up? cool stuff. wouldn't recommend if you're looking for a "regular" plot. it's like the "plot" was formed around a structure entirely meant to deprive the reader of any ...

Fresh from reading and watching 'Look Back,' I checked out 'Goodbye, Eri' because it might be the next Fujimoto one shot that will get adapted into an anime film.

Does this have anything to do with filmmaking? A little bit, but it will surprise you.

This manga is kind of a metafiction, a bad one, however. The plot is absurd just for the sake of it, with the weightless and poorly thought out twists being the worst. Art is nothing to write home about. I'd even say it's lazy, given how like 10 panels in a row have the same background, with only bubble text changing. I mean, yeah, artistic decision and whatnot, except the conversations are also dull. It's either pretend humor or make-believe philosophy. Characters are bland, no progression whatsoever. No real comedy or drama. No romance either.
