One Piece man what an incredible anime, what squandered potential. I do not think anyone should get into One Piece as its just simply too long and bad to be worth it but... some moments of this show shaped my life.
The show is generally pretty good (around 8/10) for the first 500 episodes. These are the East Blue, Arabasta, Sky Island, Water 7, Thriller Bark and Summit War arcs. These 500 episodes definitely had their ups and downs but they are generally pretty good with some incredibly "peak" moments.
Then comes the time skip and the Fish Man Island arc, which I still enjoyed. It was
...
novel and it was short. Then comes Dressrosa where the new production team and style really starts to go show it's negative side. Dressrosa is a slog to get through, the pacing grinds to an agonizing halt and everything just sucks, no other way to put it sadly. This continues until the Wano arc. Sadly this is 250 episodes long with Dressrosa and Whole Cake Island. Now hype moments exist. We get quite a few. The issue is that at this point for every ten 3/10 episodes we get a single 9/10.
Then we get to Wano. Wano is very similar to the last two arcs as the pacing issues sadly persist, however there is a noticable improvement in animation style and quality so... you know. The pacing is still horrendous but we get 3 or 4 absolute banger episodes (11/10). But the same issue is there. You need to suffer for these really good episodes.
I am currently watching the Final Saga (thank god) and my pace had been rather lackluster so far (I am 36 episodes behind). This arc is sort of ass so far so yeah its hard to watch.
I would never recommend One Piece the show to anyone. If you wanna experience it you should probably read it, however, I haven't read it so I can only parrot what others have said to me.
---------------
Even though, I am leaving a mostly negative review, I do love this show. I don't regret watching it, and it occupies a place in my heart nothing else will ever replace. I grew up with One Piece, the characters got stronger as I got (metaphorically) stronger. The experience of watching this show was so instrumental in my life that I can't not love One Piece. Even in its current form One Piece is by far the most important piece of media in my life.

Wowzers this is generic.
I like three things about Yuusha Kei. The first episode being 60 minutes long is so so nice. The fact that the information is so dispersed with fight scenes that slowly get bigger and bloodier makes the introduction very easily digestable. I think the first episode is something a lot of other animes could learn from.
The second thing I like is the Goddess' hair. It's like a little flame and sometimes it's even animated. really cute and rad.
And finally, the show is bloody. This is cool, suffering and hurting brings out emotions and break the monotony of mainstream shows... However,
...
it has a very easy and "cheap" get out of jail card where the show can bring back any hero. So even though its bloody the deaths and injuries don't matter, thus don't carry any weight. So idk. I will always cheer on as someone cuts their own leg off to win a fight though.
Everything else is mid. The story is mind numbing. Criticizing a fanatical church in the big 2026? daring today aren't we.
The animation is too much and too little at the same time. It suffers from the classic pitfall of fight centric animes where the action is choppy, and to hide that choppyness they use way too much dust and explosion and repetitive frames. Also the amount of neon colors reminds me of old school animes for some reason... nevermind that, the enemy design is ugly for me.
The characters and voice acting make me sleppy.
The world building is... fuck the worldbuilding. Fuck anyone that makes a female soldier and gives hear high heels (at least she doesn't have boob armor). You know you could perhaps build it into her character so she fights with said heels but NAAAAAAAAAAH we are sexist not creative.

The Summer Hikaru Died is a stunningly deep take on the queer awakening of a young persons' life. The whole anime is ripe with images and metaphors, some subtle (some not so much) about how a young queer person unsure of their validity, comes to grips with their own sexuality. With some of the most beautiful directing I've seen in a while, some of the most believable characters and relationships I've ever seen portrayed, TSHD grips the viewer and takes them on a personal journey.
At least this is my experience. Maybe someone without a similar background would look at this quizzically and possibly cringe at
...
some of the representation of homosexuality. Before you watch this know that there are some borderline NSFW scenes (these scenes are btw gorgeus).
There is also a story. A"skeleton in the closet" sort of mystery. This is rather stock, there isn't anything new to it. It could be argued that this is a larger metaphore for Japan's conservative nature towards LGBTQ+ people but it is more a metaphore to Japan's overall history on an international scale.
This is one of the prettiest meditations on queer experience I've seen these last couple of years, If you are interested in it, this is as close to a must watch as it gets.

This isn't a movie but 10 anime episodes stitched together. Now those 10 episodes are perfectly decent. The animation is obviously great but didn't blow me out of my seat even though I watched this in an imax (holy crap these things are impressive and loud). The pacing is all over the place, and the movie ends with a 30 minute long flashback of the villain. This works in an episodic format but here it completely deflates the end of the movie.
As for the story: generic shounen. Ain't nothing wrong with that but…well if you've seen this once, you've seen this a hundred times.
Now
...
I understand that this probably wouldn't exist without this format. This is a box office hit and that's really good, this story wouldn't have been told if they didn't adapt, so I am truly glad they did. This success possibly means that the next two movies are even more ambitious, even prettier. This is great news for the anime industry, which has been on the decline ever since anti-crunch measures and Japan's economic stagnation after covid.
Having said all that, I do believe this format (serialised tv made into movie) needs to evolve and improve to become actual feature length films. If they do not, I fear they won't reach a greater audience.
ps: I cried twice during this movie for what it's worth.

“I never went to school either.”
Chainsaw man: Rize Arc… wait Reze arc is actually about something and the movie isn't bogged down by the source material's episodic format. This is an actual movie, unlike another anime movie…
It's hard to properly rate a movie that takes place at the earlier stages of an otherwise long story. In the manga the Reze arc takes place in chapters 39-52. The public safety saga, which this movie is in mostly conversation with, is 97 chapters long. This is the start of a very long story so much of the movie won't be concluded… so much
...
of this movie is just set up... So maybe this movie won’t hit quite as hard if you didn’t do a lot of homework.
But as someone who has done their homework (I even read Firepunch… its just as insane as chs m), this movie is really really good.
First and foremost: the story. It’s decent, but also the bottleneck. It does manage to be about something… but that isn't high praise, that’s the bare minimum. The movie's central theme (heck the whole manga's), which is personality disorders, is kind of overshadowed and shoved aside by the action sequences. We aren't given time to chew on the shell the movie drops on us, we are just put into an action sequence. Now the action sequence is something else, but that does not rectify the mistakes the story makes.
To be fair to the movie, this is not the end of the story, this is really just set up. The fact that Denji's personal feelings are shoved aside makes sense since there is more to tell regarding them. It is sort of apt that the main character's mental health issues are drowned in the chaos of life.
Having said all of that the story is cohesive and is about something. Has a start and an end.
The music. They done and did it. They brought back Kenshi Yonezu and animated a cooking focused opening. Its amazing. Also Kenshke Ushio blew it out of the water. This movies soundtrack is 10/10 all along.
The animation… Well butter my biscuits and call me Rize. I have not seen anything this… bombastic like ever. Infinity castle looked good, but not this good. Holy smokes this movie has an extended fight sequence, and it’s just a blast to sit through.
And the pool scene is just peak.
You might not like Chainsaw Man, you might not like Fujimoto as a story teller but I think almost anyone will agree that the Reze arc could not have been told better. As far as adaptations go this is perfect.
I've blabbered on too long, im pulling the pin

Ajin is incredibly cool. It looks good, is fast paced. There is a gradual progression of stakes and tension. Its story is well written and thought out. However, Ajin is also incredibly generic.
There are no novel ideas, messages here. No well written characters really. Everyone is black and white, their arcs are linear, if they have any. I suppose Tosuke's character's the only one that has anything going on.
The story waves around some lofty thoughts about morality, society but none of these ideas are actually developed enough to say anything. The story doesn't really take a firm stance in any meaningful way. In the end
...
the story isn't about anything. But not every story needs to be... Some stories are just cool. This is Ajin. FPS video games in real life. And during it's short run the manga doesn't run out of fresh ideas, we are constantly surprised by Sato.
One caveat I had is that there is a lot of plot armor around Sato. Yes he is immortal but taking down 500 (iirc) military personnel is a bit of a stretch. Also the story conviniently ignores almost all riot control equipment. Tear gas, rubber bullets, stun grenades, tasers, acoustic devices, water cannons, dogs. And tear gas would be all you need really. Get your guys in masks, deploy tear gas everywhere, shoot the mask off of Sato, he revives but can't see for shit. Get close, tase him and you are done...?
Also there is a lot of weapons that you don't see in riot control because the damage is permanent. I'm talking: lasers that blind target, acoustic devices that deafen target, high energy bean bags that break bones but don't instantly kill target.
In heavily protected areas you could use booby traps. Also melee weapons. Riot gear and start breaking arms with batons, immobilize with spears. Just overcome with sheer mass.
And you could use lethal weapons that take time to kill, like a nerve gas, shrapnel.
Here is a scenario anyone could've come up with. If you lock the ajin in an area where you can continously deploy some sort of an immobilizing gas, lets say a concrete room with vents (there are 3 scenarios in the manga where such circumstances arose). You put a couple of heavily armored personnel with gas masks, riot shields and a water cannon (or sprinklers, which do NOT run out) in said room. Then you give those people rubber guns that they use to immobilize Sato.
Oh but he can revive and move around and shoot and... but NO because rubber guns actually transfer the energy into the body. If you have a continous barrage of bludgeoning projectile he literally can't move. You could also use a water cannon, that kinda fixes all of your problems with IBMs as well. There is no way that Sato or his IBM could move under the constant pressure of a water gun.
You do this until you are reasonably sure that he has no way of killing himself, then you tase him, sleeping dart him, or just let the gas that is in the room do it's job.
Yes technically IBMs could prove an issue, but we know they aren't much stronger than normal humans, we see that they can be temporarily immobilized with a heavy caliber gun or rubber bullets.

A 40 minute episode drawn out into 3 and a half hours. Quality is dog. Nothing really happens. This is pure filler and padding.
The episodes consist of characters flocking around the MC like... a circlejerk really. This whole season is one big circlejerk. "Look at us, we made this show and it's selling so wellll... oh yeah don't stop."
The story is the following (!spoilers!): Nezuko conquered the sun we need to prepare because Muzen will come for her. Training. Muzen comes for Master. Master dies. Muzen escapes and takes a bunch of demon slayers into his palace.
That's it. The training part is the aforementioned 2
...
hour long circlejerk.
Tanjiro is just Tanjiro. Even though there is a 2 hour long training arc with 80% of scenetime on him... he solves everything instantly without any sort of trouble. He breezes through every Hashira training. There is a thing at the very end where he masters the special breathing technique he has but they fumbled it, it's so incredibly whelming.
If you wanna watch the movie, just watch the first and last episode and you won't miss anything substantial... you won't miss anyTHING.
Watching the stone Hashira's sad monologue on 10x speed was actually funny, so I give them that.

The main issues with Frieren is that the anime actually starts at episode 17. The first 16 episodes are all really good but have little to no overarching plot. The only thing that connects the episodes are the 3 main character's and the vibe. The characters remain the same throughout the show, the only "development" they go through is that they remember stuff, which I love.
Even though, its a tad overplayed - every single character (and I do mean every single one) will have a sequence where they remember a thing and that will help them in the current situation, the anime heavily focuses
...
on memories, death, the human fear of being forgotten, and loss. In this respect the way Sousou no Frieren focuses so heavily on memories is something I adore.
And I guess this is why I gave it such a high rating. Sousou no Frieren has a great theme, and hammers that theme for 28 episodes from different angles and sometimes makes you think about such issues. Its an incredibly gorgeus show not just in animation but in character and message.
Almost every episode is good, but as you add these episodes together you don't get anything more than the sum of its parts. You just get a collage of 17 really good episodes on top of each other. Its akin to a old TV show this way. Of course there would be some narrative incoherency but you would not miss anything of substance if you watched them out of order.
Then of course there is the final 12-ish episodes. The great mage exam. Where we are introduced a plethora of new characters to not care about just to watch as Frieren and Fern are doing cool shit, while unimportant characters often steal the spotlight to do less cool shit. The show still takes its time to tell the stories of some of these characters, I liked Denken's or the Wirbel/Ehre stuff. But there was some horrendously boring ones like the whole Lawine/Kanne, Land/Übel, Sense/Übel, Lernen's bs.
All in all, great potential but squanders most of it. Still a good watch, but not a must imo. Is this a new trend in modern anime? Its almost the same as 'Dungeon Meshi', good episodes but no sense of direction or larger story beats.

Ah modern anime why have you strayed so far...
Okay so the animation is great. Big points!
Op and ending video/animation top tier!
The cat being a luck charm is a pretty good plot point, I liked that. Also the way the psychic powers are represented (big blue hands) is slick. Im sure that isn't a novel idea but the first time I see it.
aaand that's where the positives dry up.
The plot is generic/non existent. It hops onto the Jujutsu Kaisen trend and doesn't iterate on it whatsoever. Even the show states that aliens and spirits are similar. When the real difference is that aliens are just boring
...
enemies with nothing going on, and spirits at least have som, albeit incredibly overused, flair.
Characters don't exist, they change personalities to set up the next joke, which does not land coz the joke is almost always... porn. This is just porn. Oh but we've got so much porn in this:
- Alien abduction
- Highschool underage
- Milf
- Granny
- Accidental cheating
- Public (in highschool so its extra cool).
I can't comprehend how this is 8. something. I mean I understand this is what audiences like, probably have always liked but jesus christ people have some self respect.

It's the yearly cool anime which is shallower than a puddle of piss on a Monday night.
Pros:
- cool animation and visuals
- cool world concept
Cons:
- two dimensional characters incapable of any growth [the MC was raised as a killer but got a wife who doesn't want him to kill also dad is evil, this is the whole story]
- dumb combat without any rules: [MC is immortal... except when he is not - the rule is completely arbitrary]
- dialoges are immensely dumb: [the characters don't speak like humans would and a lot of worldbuilding is told through character dialogue in a pushy way]
...
A boringly mediocre anime which I could most aptly compare to McDonalds'. You will be satisfied and it won't taste bad, but you've eaten this shit a million times and it's high time you tried something new.
Don't waste your time with this one it ain't worth it.
