So for a very long time I've been meaning to watch the Beautiful Dreamer, as I almost always see it pretty high on people's favorites lists, and judging by reviews it seems like it's my cup of tea, and not only because of the oldschool aesthetics. However, I have no idea whether I should watch the TV series or the first Urusei Yatsura movie before it. Do you think I can skip the TV show and get straight to the movie, or naw? And if I can, what should I really expect from it?

That makes enough sense. Oshii was focused on taking the concept of a cheating idiot and exploring that idea. I wouldn't say that it was explored enough to justify Ataru's actions but there was something there that grounded the comedy, rather than being endlessly goofy.
