Yeah the ending when I first saw it felt like an arse-pull with Near's plan at the end (tbh it's not that I dislike Near at all, just his plan was bs) so to fix that my headcanon is just that Matsuda's theory was right - Near was written to be willing to "cheat" (hardly cheating when you're catching someone who's literally using a note book of death tbh) and extremely childish/ unwilling to lose so it's not remotely out of character for him to have used Mikami's real Death Note to cause those events.

Nice, nice, gl with the family stuff - always rough to some degree unfortunately. Yeah Death Note is iconic for reasons XD, tbh I only heard about Death Parade through DN even though they aren't really all that similar, but both definitely warrant high praise imo
