What has such a cool premise and world is entirely bogged down by TALK TALK TALK and with that, even the dialogue is forced and falls flat. A story is built on it's characters in these situations but I can't seem to give a damn about any of them.
The art is way better than a story of this caliber deserves, but also slightly repetitious. OhO weird/scary face gets old after a while.
The sound is okay I guess, nothing really memorable, and has weird peaks and valleys.
I liked the whole town that spray painted stuff, it was about the only memorable part since episode 1, where
...
everyone's hopes were high enough only to get f*ing slaughtered by a horrid story. This isn't on the studio or anyone else at all. Just a bad story, or at the very least characterization.
dog writes dialogue like he's never had a human conversation before.

Disappointment, thy name is One Punch (season 3). Everyone that's here was probably super excited for this season, like a kid who got a puppy for christmas. Similarly, I feel like our gifted puppy also has terminal explosive diarrhea and is projectile crapping all over the house while tearing all of our shoes to shreds.
The most glaring deficit is in the animation. I'm not kidding when I say that the still frames are ubiquitous, but the real crime here is when the animators actually have to put down Battlefield 6 for five seconds to hastily pen what is arguably some of the most laughable
...
frames this season, like Garou casually skiing down a small hill on one foot in the backdrop like some stop-motion Gumby shit. Characters just facing each other and only their lips are moving, backgrounds that have absolutely no life whatsoever. Man, the embarrassing comics I drew as a kid were probably on this level, albeit much less funny (unless you take humor in reminding me about it).
It's cool to see all of our favorite characters again, but there doesn't seem to be much of a thread other than "monsters want to kill all the heroes because". I'm not exactly sure how I'm a few episodes in now but feel like not much has happened? Other than that, I think the writing is fine, it's a character driven show after all. Still, with what Bandai passes off as "animation", I feel like it's not much better than just reading the manga while someone narrates the frames at you. The whole point of an adaptation is to see the source come to life, but somehow this happens to be more stiff than the still frames in a manga. After three episodes, I can't pretend to hope it will get better.
I feel like bandai might have accidentally hired a team of that kid you knew in the first grade that ate elmer's glue. Never figured out what happened to that kid, but I guess he got hired by bandai. Good for him, bad for us.

I liked the first season, dumb as it was, so I came in knowing full well that this was not supposed to be a masterpiece of storytelling and animation. I think when it first started out we were maybe a little more invested in the characters, but in this season outside of one fairly big reveal, everything has become relentlessly formulaic and campy. The stakes don't feel high, the emotions fall flat, and the jokes (are there jokes?) are as noticeable as an ant's fart.
It's heartwarming and charming in some places, but I really can't get over how much I don't really care about the
...
characters or their motivations. There isn't really much of an overarching plot, making it kind of an agglomeration of plot points or arcs with very little to tie them together. Everything is friendly and safe, and everything is told rather than shown in a reliably natural manner. Sound falls flat and quality animation is sparse.
This is a generic Isekai with the only thing holding it together being the quirky vending machine gimmick that lost its unique flavor after season 1. Good for kids, I guess.

Like chicken soup for the otaku's soul, this show is feel-good and cutesy and for that i respect it. hard to stay upset when everyone's cute and smiling. While certainly no masterpiece, if it was supposed to only be that, then it's fine. The big issue is the buildup of characters from season 1 kind of seemed to point to some kind of plot buildup in 2, but that didn't quite materialize and many of the characters simply served as window dressing in the background or sycophants for the MC when in the fore.
The animation is very very basic but i loved kemono friends so
...
i'll let it slide. No one here was expecting Akira or anything. Still, it's hard to look at sometimes with the derp faces in the background, struggling in particular with faraway shots. this usually happens because for some reason the creator decided anywhere from 6 to 12 characters had to be in the same shot despite having no lines or relevance to the so called plot that was happening.
In total, a cute and lightheaded somewhat slice of life show if you're feeling sad or something but otherwise meandering, dialed in, overly simple, and poorly advanced story/show that may leave many confused. I feel like this served as an emotional outlet for the creator more than anything. For me it's the kind of thing i'd watch while playing phone games or organizing mail, since 1. you won't miss much and 2. it's a nice reprieve from real daily life which most definitely is not all smiles.
seriously, that art though please god.

This is a story that is so far up its own fourth point of contact that it has lost itself in the confusion. It would be slightly better if they were juggling fewer balls, became a little more focused. A lot of the "emotion" feels forced, and I just can't gel with the story whatsoever. Most scenes are dragged out for some dramatic reason but if I'm not feeling the drama then it's like watching paint dry while the paint yells at you.
The animation hasn't changed much since S1, it's serviceable, not much to write home about, but even if I did write home about
...
it the letter would be far more interesting than the dialogue. This is just another show crapped out by a studio with a decent premise but cannot stick the landing. Our heroine vacillates between tragic hero and utterly useless crybaby, particularly when Adonis comes up, and I really don't see why she should give a damn about him since his only redeeming quality in her eyes is that he's tragic too?
None of it makes sense and I suggest the creator take anti-depressants and try again.

More western BS masquerading as anime, and normally it wouldn't bother me but it's so damned hamfisted that I really cannot tolerate it. Like someone came up with an idea and thought, "how can we shove as MANY cliches and political check boxes as possible?" Also, the whole premise is kind of idiotic, and even if that is okay (I like to give the benefit of the doubt), it still suffers from uninteresting characters who are like cardboard cutouts of more interesting characters from more interesting anime, as well as the incredulity of most of society just like "oh well we are all going to
...
die", seemingly uninterested in their demise.
You would think that people would be tearing crap down and fighting tooth and nail to find this guy, not sitting on their asses making jokes. Mass suicides, riots, robberies, etc. I just don't feel it and the cast just doesn't sell what the story is supposed to feel. It's emotionless and without any depth. Perhaps cut out the PC bullcrap and write a script and characters that actually make me feel something. Too bad...I had high hopes for this but the campy dialogue, robotic characters, and "world building" are totally awful. One of the worst yet.

Nothing. Nothing happens, at all, ever. It's just 12 more episodes adding new characters, some of whom die immediately. I REALLY don't care at all, nor do I have a reason to since most of the new ones are boring. 24 episodes, almost half a year, and NOTHING happens. This is just insane. I don't even blame the studio at this point, I blame the writer. This is garbage writing. I don't need 30 frikking backstories over a year just to watch a damn tournament. HOLY CRAP.
I did find the animation and sound reasonable, some of the characters over the last two cours were cool,
...
but at some point it just starts to feel like story padding. Just adding more and more and more and I really don't see the point. We just barely got a look at the big bad "demon king" but you could cut half of the characters and spend a little more time on lore and the outsiders because right now it's only barely understandable. Sorry dog, but at this rate we will never see a tournament EVER, and they only add the lore at the VERY END. Jesus who wrote this junk?

I had no understanding nor expectations of Dandadan coming into it; almost passed over it. I'm glad I didn't.
In a year of almost constantly terrible animation (with some exceptions of course) Dandadan has been amazing. The quality and love this show has been shown by the studio is on par with Akira. In fact it kind of shares more with FLCL. The themes are mostly about teen angst, sexuality (thank goodness it's not hamfisted though), and the wonderment of youth at the possibilities of life (as seen through the lens of the paranormal) are all parts of growing up.
Sound has been on point as well,
...
and I don't just mean the bangin OP and ED either. The sound mixing has been very well done, as opposed to some other anime or even western media in general where everything is a whisper but random sound effects shatter your eardrums and windows and your cat hides forever in a closet.
The cast of characters is a motley crew of a somewhat regular girl that ostensibly finds okarun awkward and distasteful, but they quickly become friends after arguing whether or not ghosts or aliens exist. Fear not, kiddos: we get ghosts, aliens, curses, the dang ol loch Ness monster, pistol shrimp (?), and a seemingly 30 year old grandmother with a bat.
The sexual themes can be a little obvious at times, but are handled both tastefully and comically. Everyone's after the banana...
To digress, this has been a wild ride and I'm only 3/4 of the way done. A lot of this year has been a let down, particularly in the realm of animation but this show has it in spades. Comedy shows and writing in general can be extremely hard to do, and most settle with basic "misunderstanding" or other tropes, but Dandadan has chosen a unique way of approaching not only that but also the angst of the teenage experience.
10/10, in every category. Right now for me this is AOTY.

As a writer, there is no way I could have written this show. It is very well done, from the characters first: they all seem kind of one note at first, but the season delivers a lot in regards to their stories and gives quite a bit in character development. Each episode shows us a lesson from Sensei's stories, which usually involve him creeping around just observing and writing. Many side characters are interesting as well, and often relate directly to the overarching episodic plot.
The music is okay, but used at important times which is nice. The jokes are kind of repetitive but not
...
to the point of irritating; in fact most are relatable and can make me chuckle.
I do think (despite the overall score on MAL) that the show is one of the better ones this season and instead of totally relying on tropes (other than maybe dragon quest) it does honestly deliver some actually good writing, so I don't know what to expect and I don't have to skip boring scenes.
This summer may have been a letdown, but this was a nice surprise. The art isn't anything to write home about, but this show doesn't really need it, nor is it as bad as some other shows with unnecessary still frames everywhere.
Please, watch this!

It's not your average isekai, sure, and it's fun to watch. The wholesomeness almost gives it more of a relaxed vibe. The characters (especially the side characters) drive the fun of the story, though I'm not entirely sure what the narrative is trying to accomplish. It's rife with contrived short plots that end or start just out of some kind of convenience to the MC, so it's really hard to tell where they want to go with this. It really doesn't have the pull (or Macguffin) that other shows have but each episode is still comfy to watch.
The animation is, well...kind of suitable to
...
the work but nothing to write home about. The kids are cute and it's nice to see how they all interact, including the contracted beasts. If you're looking for a high impact thriller, this is not going to be your jam. I do also like him introducing all kinds of meals and sauces and such to people that might as well have been eating cardboard. Still, most episodes, while having enjoyable moments, fall kind of flat with the lack of tension or direction. In a way it feels almost like a slice of life anime than an isekai, not that it can't be both.
If you're looking for something more relaxed and cute this summer, I definitely recommend this title. It's not the most well written but it's still enjoyable. The art...not great; the sound...dull. However the characters are fun to see and perhaps the narrative will be fleshed out better later. This seems like a character driven show, so on that level it's done a great job. I sincerely think it's fine, but mostly forgettable, even if I want to see more.
Overall, 7/10 for me. Although that is borderline since artistically speaking it's not that great.
