black lagoon is an anime synthesis of jackie chan and john woo and quentin tarantino. it's crime and girls with guns and deals gone wrong and splashy, fun ultraviolence. if i had to show like, a normal friend an anime series, it would probably be black lagoon. because it's sort of divorced from a lot of the sort of genre conventions that usually come with a show like this, mainly in how much of its writing is grounded in real-world places, cultures, and ethnicities. the lagoon company are people i could meet on a bus or in a bar or at a shooting range-- people

a sort of throughline to my jojos experience has been that araki has continually been getting me to love things that i usually just can't fucking stand in media. it just keeps happening; he'll approach something i usually hate at an angle that has me blinking and sitting up straight and going oh. well then, i guess i'll be thinking about this forever now.
i went into the end of stone ocean thinking there's genuinely no fucking way that he will be able to pull off a satisfying ending to this. there's just no practical way to execute a resonant, satisfying ending to what has been ...

let's go eat some italian food is one of the best episodes of television ever to be produced or aired. this sentence isn't enough to count as a full review, so i am doubling down on it. i genuinely believe this. i am not being ironic. araki is one of the greatest to ever do it and i think everyone on the planet should be legally mandated to watch diamond is unbreakable episode 10: let's go eat some italian food. what i'm saying here does of course go for the rest of the season too, it's some of the best tv i've watched.

i'll be completely honest here, if you don't like hunter x hunter, i just fundamentally like don't respect you as a person. togashi's work here is masterful and fun and heartbreaking, & some of the best anime if not just the best tv out there, i think. it's extremely obviously a deconstruction + love letter to the genre that takes classic story beats of classic shonen & treats them with a genuine gravity and thoughtfulness that's rare to find. you get as much out as you put into it-- if you go into it assuming gon is going to be the next wish fulfillment solo
