black lagoon is an anime synthesis of jackie chan and john woo and quentin tarantino. it's crime and girls with guns and deals gone wrong and splashy, fun ultraviolence. if i had to show like, a normal friend an anime series, it would probably be black lagoon. because it's sort of divorced from a lot of the sort of genre conventions that usually come with a show like this, mainly in how much of its writing is grounded in real-world places, cultures, and ethnicities. the lagoon company are people i could meet on a bus or in a bar or at a shooting range-- people i probably have met, honestly. it's a fun show. take it for what it is, a love letter to vaguely exploitative hong kong cinema and how fucking metal it is to skate your gunboat off the beached hull of a sunken speedboat so you can air launch a torpedo at a helicopter full of bloodthirsty mercenaries.
