Ayo what happened here??? I know that episode 1 also has an unfinished version, so I hope we won't have to wait until the BD release to get a finished episode. What a disappointing way to end the Bakumatsu arc...

I'm surprised it took this long for Yokohama Animation Laboratory to fall apart.

Holy shit, I thought the animation looked rough at first and then they just stopped drawing the backgrounds. In allm y decades of watching anime I have never seen a studio actually release something this bad.

Jesus christ this was rough, did they even finish the episode?

Edit: apparently Hidive got the unfinished episode and uploaded in place of the finished version which is a shame because the story in this one was one of my faves of the entire series. I hope they get it sorted asap, but as of 5:21 Philippines time/6:21 PM JST there’s no change.

Last week I said I didn’t really care about Tsuchiura and I feel so bad because he actually would’ve been Jinya’s best friend in another life. The way they were both betrayed by people they love, Jinya found purpose again in hunting demons and Tsuchiura found it in following Yasuhide who he knew deep down was full of shit. He just needed something to believe in, he also needed to believe his girl actually hated and betrayed him of her own volition because the pain of knowing he killed her and she didn’t want to do that was too much to bear. Extremely sad story and in another world, he’d have got a happy ending. Fight obviously looked horrendous with this unfinished ep, but the dialogue was really poignant.

Yasuhide got exactly what he deserved, I knew from the first time we met him that he was a pos that couldn’t be saved. Jinya could’ve saved himself a world of headache by taking him out then.

“See you again someday” NO KISS OR HUG??! 😭 why would they do this to us. I needed that Ofuu x Jinya ship to sail so bad and got so happy when she told him to stay and run the shop and basically asked him to marry her. Of course these hardheaded mfs wouldn’t let it be that easy. I actually do appreciate ofuu wanting to become independent and learn how to carry herself in the world because she has depended on her dad and her OG parents/the garden before that. I hope and pray that when this is all said and done, they’ll find each other again in modern times and ofuu will be running a shop in the middle of Tokyo.

Natsu and Zenji got married??!! Wasn’t zenji like a grown ass man when Natsu was a kid?? Different time and era I know, but that’s awks.. I’m glad to see she’s not holding a grudge against Jinya and actually feels at fault and wants to apologize to him.. given she looks like she’s 30+ now, idk if she’ll get that chance since Jinya’s leaving town. That goodbye meant so much to me tho. I really hated when they had their misunderstanding and falling out

Onto the Meiji era next week. I wonder what it’ll have in store for Jinya and Nomari. Hopefully we get a completed episode too.

This was terrible LOL. Sucks because it was such a good point in the story. I knew something was wrong when Tsuchiura went demon mode and his hand just stopped when connecting with those villagers haha.

Well on to the next one.

Watch the Bilibili's or ADN's versions, it's better than Hidive's.

This episode was so funny... in the worst way possible...
The most obvious problem is that the compositing is I'd say the worst I have ever seen.
(I think this is worse than even Delico's Nursery. (If there is anyone here who has seen it, sorry for triggering your trauma...))
Half the time it was nothing but the layers stacked on top of each other with no edits at all. (If that, because a few scenes didn't even have a background...)
There were also basically no drawing corrections. (When Nomari hugged Jinta, I thought he transformed for a second, because his hands doubled in size...)
But I also thought the writing was not that good as well. (A single 3 minute flash back is not nearly enough to make me feel for Tsuchiura...)
Adding all of that to the fact that I was not a fan of using the modernization of Japan to drive the plot, makes this the worst episode of the anime by far.
I hope they delay the next episodes a bit to hopefully give the arc the time it needs.
(Although, I have no idea what they could explore in only 3 episode that would also give a satisfying enough season finale.)

Edit: Forgot to mention that, near the end, Jinta was talking without moving his mouth (when he was carrying Nomari).

Edit 2: What I said about the visuals was aimed at the version I watched that day, which was unfinished. (Why that was released is a different question.)
They did fix the visuals for the final release, but the story criticisms still apply.

Oh I'm so lucky to watch a right version from the start.

Anyway, I think while the animation quality is not bad at all, in fact, it's above average compare to other anime this year, it's still not enough to fully convey the depth of the story. A story like this need the highest quality possible, a level that Japan can only produce less than a dozen per year.

Alright so apparently they released the unfinished ver.Was really appalled there, felt like it wouldnt have made sense how incomplete the background was considering it looked normal in different scenes.

I know its not impossible considering YokoLab,but with how much else was done they couldnt have missed a very obvious thing. Not too sure if its theirs or Hidives at fault on giving the unfinished part.

Given the bad rep the studio have,im sure many blame them either way while not even knowing theres a completely done version.

Those unfinished backgrounds... I really hope they make it to the finish line before production collapses. Only a few more episodes left.

Tsuchiura turned out to be alright in the end, just another demon who was caught up in unfortunate circumstances. Interesting that Jinya's powers lets the other person see his memories as well. As for Ofuu, that was basically a proposal right? Though I understand why she chose to go her own way in the end (since she was a demon born of loss and loneliness). Overall it seemed like the theme of the episode was about the three demon moving away from the desire that made them demons in the first place.

And we get a glimpse of Natsu and Zenji at the end (hapily married!). Seems that she holds no grudge against Jinya, time really does heal all wounds.

This story deserves a better staff, i mean bruh, what a waste. This could've been a masterpiece in the hands of a better studio, staff or whatever. The novels have so much depth and the first episodes were okay but as it continued the quality even in story telling as well as the animation itself failed to satisfy the audience. The author of the original novel must have felt betrayed.

The random drawing change in this ep was hilarious.
Gotta say I always hated the Japanese "I can't depend on you" thing. That's the very definition of a couple and it's a great thing to have. No wonder they are disappearing. They want more marriages and kids but seem to do everything possible to have less of it.

Like holy crap, it was constantly flipping between finished shaded art and totally unfinished, unshaded, outright pencil sketches of backgrounds. I mean dang.

@slayer70 How did this even happen? The difference between the 2 is so large I would've expected them to have gotten the "finished" version completely out and ready before now.

I mean, it could've just been the streaming platforms' fault for not replacing the old one with the finished one on time. But I'm still disappointed that it released in this state at all regardless of reason.

@fast2611 It's Yokohama Animation Lab. At this point it's considered "normal" for this to happen when they make something.

Sometimes the studio's have to put up with BS funding and schedules, other times the studio themselves are just poorly managed.

Wait this is the ending of this arc? Kinda expecting more, I assume we're gonna have a big time skip.

I do feel sorry for Ofuu, gonna be lonely running that store on her own, she really should have gone with Jinta.

Funny to see that released the unfinished version screenshots, the animation quality really started to drop in this 2nd cour. I wouldn't be suprised if we get a Promised Neverland slideshow for the last 3 eps.

The pathos was good. Although, the half-finished scenes were quite jarring. The ones with incomplete background art, that is. Especially in the soba shop where we've seen the entire thing designed and illustrated before. It was incredibly eerie to see the background reduced to basic color washes and lines.

Granted, it was fascinating to see from the standpoint of understanding better how individual scenes are put together and developed over time.

Well I was gonna say the plane finally crashed and burned, like I didn’t know how they were gonna finish out the season with an episode coming out like this lol, but apparently HiDive was sent the wrong episode and I just watched an incredibly undercooked version. But I gotta say, it was a unique experience to say the least lol, although it did take away from the really good story beats unfortunately, so perhaps I’ll rewatch the episode in good quality later so I can appreciate the ending to this arc in its proper form, because really it would have been a fantastic episode if I didn’t watch the wrong version.

But I was able to take in the events of the episode still, the Tsuchiura stuff was really good, backstory was upsetting but I’m glad he was able to pass on in a satisfying way, it explored more of what makes a demon the way they are which I thought was interesting too. Yasuhide tho? His end was a bit disappointing I thought, so he just wanted to die an honorable death because he knew he couldn’t stop Japan from changing, I like the twist but it really felt like more was going on with him, oh well. And damn so Jinya has to say bye to Ofuu now too, a shame neither could stay with the other but it’s like Jinya said, they are demons so the chance of meeting each other again is high, a damn shame that ship never sailed tho, they would’ve been a great couple. And lastly, hey Natsu and Zenji at the end! Cool to see them again but a shame Jinya missed them, but maybe it’s for the best, I’m mainly just glad they’re both doing well, and apparently they’re in a relationship now.

Now let’s just hope HiDive gets the right episode next week lol.

Come on, guys... I get that they've been having a rough time, but this was just pathetic.

I don't care that the HiDive version I've watched was the "wrong version." They've still submitted that for public consumption. If it was a "mistake," then why can I still see that version 12 hours later?

How can they have such a beautiful script and do such a poor job putting it on screen? I actually teared up for a brief moment, but that moment's been thoroughly and repeatedly trampled by the horrifying visuals. What a shame.

Great episode even though I watched the unfinished version. I'm sad that Ofuu and Jinya didn't get together because you could tell they both really wanted to, but had individual goals that were stopping them. The demon dude's backstory was also heartbreaking after he killed his love interest, which seemed by accident. Then finding out really did love him and was forced to lure him out? Those guys were complete scum. Lasty, I'm glad we got to see Natsu and I kinda saw the signs of her getting with her guard, but the age gap is huge and since he probably had to take care of her after her father died, that's weird af. He even looked like an old man when we saw him again lol.

Overall, a solid episode and since Jinya is leaving, I hope we see some of his friends again.

Natsu was 19 when her father died in 1856, while Zenji was 26 at that time.
Now in 1867, they are 30 and 37 respectively.
So, while there is a 7 year age gap, I wouldn't call it huge.
As far as my knowledge goes, the biggest age gap in the series is 9 years, an arranged marriage in the Taishou arc.
