Do you enjoy engaging in anime discussions in MAL forums?

Genuine question, I actually do enjoy quite a bit engaging (both creating and replying) in these forums (even if it can sometimes be frustrating). But do y'all actually like these things or you just do it to pass the time or smth like that?

I find it pretty fun discussing anime on mal. It is a rare case of a website non spammed by engagement farm to get cash so it actually allows discussions. I never seen mal shadowban either.

Overall no because most have such bland personalities and boring anime taste but some users here are fun to talk to and have some interesting things to say
my big post count is from before 2020 when AD was better, now we have people like dragevard and berriessan

Yes i like engaging when taking a break to pass the time between series i'm going through. I think its kinda odd we don't have a high traffic on forums.
Recommend me some shoujo manga ♡

@KlSSA The thing is that forums imo have a kind of high barrier of entry. It is already rare enough to create a MAL account and be active on it (which already discards most fans), but you have to enjoy reading forums and ideas beyond one liners or memes and repyling to people online in a very different way to regular social media. If anything I think there are more people replying in these things that I would expect. Also there are a lot of weirdos in MAL so most people who are novices to anime will run the other way if they see a forum where a guy is asking in what bikini do their waifu look the best.

@Catalano I kind of hate and like your presence in forums lol. Like you go hating MT on every forum in existance and such, but I do respect the replying consistency you have (which I don't) and we do have some common ground in things we like apparently.
Curious btw, why do you hate Dragevard and Berriessan? XD

No, because the quoting functionality is soooo ass....

I quote a small part of someone's post and the system just adds the whole shit above. Why?! Forums from 2007 were more intuitive than MAL's forums.

There is a way to prevent that XD, I discovered it some time ago. You quote what you want to quote, copy that "text" and then make a general forum reply instead of replying to that specific person, like what I'm doing right now.

I like coming here from time to time. My friends don't watch much anime, so I don't usually have anyone to talk to about it. Here, I have the opportunity to speak my mind a bit.

dragevard recommended mushoku to me but the problem is that he lied telling me exactly what I wanted to hear, he said stuff like mushoku is super perverted and dangerous, you can imagine my reaction after watching it.
berriessan is a big shingeki fan but he is an alliance supporter
and on top of that, both are huge moe blob fans therefore my direct enemies and they never shut up about their moe blobs

Yes of course, it's the main reason i use mal for, it's certainly not for tracking anime that's for sure.

The ecchi tag in mushoku is pretty deceptive.

@naoya3desu I would actually say the opposite XD. Like I love the concept of discussing things on forums, but some people are just smth else.

Yes, I like this place how largely very civil, very friendly and very relaxed laid back all of it feels which reminds me a bit of non mainstream youtube, many subredits and overall pre mid 2010s internet as well.

@Catalano Makes sense tbh. Still funny to me that you hold such a grudge, but that's part of the fun part of engaging with people online.

@Pit93 That became easier since they've implemented the selected quote. You do have to copy/paste it into a new reply though.

For a long time, I agree it was not so intuitive.

I think most people who dislike the forums don't visit them anyway. Only masochists and against-all heroes would stay?

I don't engage in anime discussions with anyone on the Internet.

I rather use my time for better things like trading cute waifu images.

Ummm I put hate it, but it isn't really that strong of a thing. The answer is more like I dislike it because most of the people here have a really narrow worldview so immediately if I do spend time to post anything I realize it was a waste of time not long after. There is not many people open to discussion, or basically their discussion is about getting everyone around them to concede to whatever strange worldview they have manifested. I don't think I'm too different, it is hard to change my mind about something, but still most people feel like they aren't basing anything on reason and contradict themselves too much. Also I have trouble where I will spend like 1 hour typing a single post because I rewrite it over and over and that seriously damages my ability to do anything.

A lot of people here are just endlessly repeating the one thing they desire and most of it is just completely irrelevant to anime unless its trying to enforce their ideology onto anime.

A lot of people use these forums to just vent lol. I'm not going to say names because the last time I did my comment wasn't up for very long (I kind of ranted as well, so it makes sense), but people just start telling their life stories disguised as anime discussions.

I think it's kinda fun, it being a forum site () you get a lot more actual thought-out posts/replies which I prefer to the all-lowercase (), no-punctuation type of replies you tend to get a lot on social media (). Unfortunately it's not () always that good, unsure what the weekly chapter discussion threads are like for other manga () but for Kagurabachi they're always disappointingly surface-level, with a lot of people literally just giving their synopsis of what happened that chapter ("Chihiro has been injured and Soga is stronger than ever", that type of shite), but the main forums tend to be good ().

I like the lower traffic () honestly, makes it feel more personal when you see a lot of the same few people and your replies actually have a chance of someone seeing () them. I'm watching JJK season 3 as it's coming out but I basically never () use the episode discussion threads for this reason, when you have 200+ replies () posted in a few hours there's basically no chance () of anyone reading your reply, feels very pointless.

I prefer r/anime on Reddit for anime episode discussions but I sometimes look here for calmer discussions on newer anime and for old anime discussions

I'm on the fence.

I like seeing interesting questions and takes, and learning more about the medium and the "community". I also like posting replies, kind of as a way to "pay back" for an interesting read I had, to contribute and be useful, or to support a take that I like.

At the same time, I have to wade through a lot of crap while browsing the forum. It's irritating and really draining when I see posts just trying to pick fights, derail the conversation or spout weird political rants.

That's me for real. It's shocking how much time I can sink into writing a single post. I sometimes get annoyed after realizing it and just close the window without posting LOL.

Usually I don't feel very equipped to make meaningful, coherent contributions, though, or even follow other people's conversations...

It depends on the situation and the people you're talking to. Sometimes it's fun and informative, sometimes it's stifling and exhausting.
