New 'Ghost in the Shell' TV Anime Revels Additional Staff, First Promo for Summer 2026

Entertaiment company Bandai Namco Filmworks opened an official website for the new Koukaku Kidoutai (The Ghost in the Shell) television anime on Thursday, revealing additional staff, the first promotional video, and a key visual (pictured). The new anime series will air on Kansai TV and Fuji TV affiliate networks on Tuesdays at 11:00 p.m. beginning in July 2026.

Moko-chan (Dandadan assistant director) is helming the anime at Science SARU. Toh EnJoe (Godzilla: S.P) is handling the series composition and script. Shuuhei Handa (Little Witch Academia (TV)) is designing the characters.

The latest installment in the franchise, Koukaku Kidoutai: SAC_2045 - Saigo no Ningen (Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045 - The Last Human), compiling the second season of the Koukaku Kidoutai: SAC_2045 (Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045) 3DCG anime series, opened in Japan in November 2023.

Beautiful trailer and a truly stunning poster. I used to be hyped about this show; however, upon reading the original manga, I think I won't be entertained by the anime. Don't get me wrong, I believe in Science SARU's craftsmanship and all, and the whole premise of GitS is great, it's just... I don't know how they will find a fine balance between overly long technobabble sections and action scenes; or how the author's notes are gonna make their way into the show (if they will); or how they will manage to implement nudity and specific jargon into the show (hopefully they won't water it down to satisfy "stereotypical mainstream viewers" who might not even be interested in giving the new GitS show a try).

As an old man, and a greenhorn when it comes to anime, I'm more concerned with the quality of the writing, direction, etc, than fidelity to the source material. That being said, since the prices for the source mangas are pretty high, I would be happy to experience what those comics have to offer.
Call me a tourist if you like. I simply want to be entertained, and there are lots of anime works that have done just that, and all the GITS works, from the old movies, series, to the "Arise" series have done just that; Entertain me. I'm unapologetic with my like of violence and sexy women in skimpy outfits, and man, anime hits the nail on the head.
I look forward to this edition of GITS, especially, as far as I'm concerned, every single past iteration of it has been great, IMHO. I never watched the live-action version that the wierdos in Hollywood released.

if its not "uncensored" then they have no business telling us it'll be uncensored, regardless of the reason

science saru like any other studio adapting a manga, they're doing what they're told and paid for to do, no more no less.

@EcchiGodMamster I don't think it will be nerfed in anyway in this case, science saru have an excellent history of respecting ecchi scenes in their works.

well yea i know the 90s had PLENTY of dumb censorship, hence OVAs being so prevelant

but still i mean, considering this adaptation is supposedly faithful lets hope NOTHING gets nerfed

Funny thing, it was my favourite movie of all times until I decided to stop my decade-long boycott of the 1989 manga and read it, and it completely destroyed my interest in that movie. SAC 1 was better in every concievable way, even if not at the level of the manga (considering, again, it's untranslable in animated for as it is).

@RobertBobert You can always wait for the new anime and watch it, the gits anime are self contained so you don't need to watch one to see the others.

My first impression is of a lighter cyberpunk tone, so that will be something new and fresh for this franchise (to me anyway).

Of course, it's debatable how commercial this looks/will end up.

@ProudElitist I see you point and i honestly don't have a solution to it, it would be interesting to see how science saru solves this dilemma, i think they will just cut them completely so as not to interfere with the pace of the show or the action, guess we're just gonna have to wait and see how the anime does it.

@tchitchouan You never read the manga, did you? they're too goddamned long, sometimes mixed inbetween the vignettes themselves. Shirow is a person with a tendency to write long-ass notes overdetailing everything. He did it in the 1989 manga, he did it in Man Machine interface, he did it in Appleseed, he's just a thing of his. Making eye catches or scene transitions of ten minutes wouldn't work, it would bore people out of their mind and it would stop the action to an insane degree. In facts, the action would completely stop. Read the manga and then consciously tell me those notes are translatable into anything other than a comic book, it's literally impossible.

@ProudElitist Ah i see, so accrding to you the problem is that the manga has additional valuable exposition that does not translate well to the anime form and without a crucial piece of information might be missing which could be a problem, but as i said they can always add them in the form of eye catches in between intermission or scene transitions.

@tchitchouan the quirks are mostly his neverending and ultradetailed notes. They're an important part of the worldbuilding and sometimes - not always - they give direct context to what is going on in the vignettes, or give his personal thoughts about specific topics like warfare conducted throught the use of medical wastes etc. etc. etc. You remove those, you remove half if not more of the content of the manga. Those notes cannot be translated in animated or live-action form because if you had a narrator explaining you what is going on onto the screen constantly everything would stop and people would be bored to death. In the manga, on the other hand, they function without any problem because the action is static and they accompany well the vignettes. If you haven't read it, read the manga and then you will see what I'm writing about.

@ProudElitist Would you mind giving examples of quirks that Shirow used in the the manga are untranslatable in an animated form ? is it like how Araki often adds blurbs on location and stand stat powers but that can easily fixed by a narrator or a an eye catch so i don't what are these kind of quirk, is he using special page layout techniques or things that couldn't work in anime ?

@tchitchouan that is a completely different medium and the quirks Shirow used in the the manga are untranslatable in an animated form. They work on static pictures on paper, on the video they wouldn't work because not only they would probably bore people out of their mind but the action would continuosly interrupted. Or you want to tell me that, by owning not one version of the 1989 manga but two as well as Man Machine interface, having read the entire series from front to end and having watched all the animated works based on this series (last shitty movies of Arise and crappy 2045 permitted) as well as the rest of the animes based on the works of Shirow I don't know what I'm writing?
